The Carolina Shag is a form of dance that originated in Myrtle Beach in the 1940's. The 1989 film Shag starring Bridget Fonda was filmed in Myrtle Beach and featured this dance form. In the dance the upper body and hips hardly move as the legs do convoluted kicks and fancy footwork.

Annual Shag competitions are held in North Myrtle Beach.The shag is a form of swing dancing that evolved from the jitterbug and jump blues of the big band jazz era and originated at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina during the 1940s. It is most often associated with beach music.

In addition to being the home of the Shag, North Myrtle Beach includes such attractions as House of Blues, Barefoot Landing, Alabama Theater, Barefoot Princess Riverboat.

Just to the north of North Myrtle Beach, you'll discover Little River and Cherry Grove where you can schedule a deep-sea fishing excursion or take a cruise down the Intracoastal Waterway. Restaurants, marinas, lots to shopping and fresh seafood abound. If you can arrange it, plan to visit Little River on the weekend in May during the famous Blue Crab Festival .This day-long event showcases live entertainment, arts-and-crafts displays and an abundance of fresh seafood.
