I received the following e-mail on Feb. 20, 2005, from L Hunt.

My husband and I and our Whippet spent 2 lovely nights (our 40th wedding anniversary treat) at the Mariner Motel. We had read an unfavorable review somewhere on the 'Net about the Mariner but had also read 2 very good reviews. I'm SO glad we chose to go with the good ones.

When we walked in, my first comment was "we could live here". The motel is a little older and not your Ritz or Marriott, but it's clean, very convenient to everything and oh so friendly for dogs. Our quarters consisted of 2 bedrooms with 2 double beds each, a kitchen with the same size range that's in my kitchen (36" I think), an apartment-size refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and toaster and a table-height bar with 2 chairs but room for 4. There were 2 chairs in the "sitting room" that could also be used at the bar. There were dishes, pots and pans and silverware. The bedrooms are separate from the sitting room and kitchen, so I was able to do my normal getting up reading in the middle of the night without disturbing my husband.

The sitting room, mentioned above, has a TV, sofa, coffee table, end table and a bookcase. As you might have guessed, there is also a bathroom. This had a tub, commode and sink and was also very clean. The whole motel and grounds is very rustic with lots of brick, and our quarters had brick floors in some places but also carpet in the bedrooms and sitting room. Since we were there in the middle of February 2005 I can't tell you what the grounds and plantings look like in the season, but even in February I could imagine how beautiful the whole place must be in summer. Look at the picture on their website. It's taken from the front of the building, and that gorgeous pool you see is heated. It's an outdoor pool, and if the weather is cold you see the steam coming off it. It's immaculately clean and we didn't walk past it many times that there was not someone in it. I'm not a pool person and had left my bathing suit at home. But even so, if I had had the suit I would've had to try that beautiful, inviting pool.

If you're looking for a new, upscale, glitzy place to stay, don't come here. If you're looking for a very comfortable, clean and convenient place to stay where the other guests seem to almost become family, this is the place. We talked with one couple from Canada who had been there for about a week and were staying for 6 more weeks. We got the impression that during the off season there are more retiree-age people there who stay pretty much all winter, but one lady told me that in the season there is a mixed group of older, middle and younger age guests.

The only thing that will keep me from returning to the Mariner Motel is the fact that they don't take cats. The lady at the desk said they did at one time but that the cleanup if the cat messes inappropriately is just too expensive as you have to call in professionals to get the odor out. I can relate to that as I've had cats all my life, and I don't blame them one bit for not allowing cats. Thing is, our little Miss Katie can't be left alone for more than 2 nights, so we'll have to find a place that will take her. On the other hand, Miss Katie MIGHT have to learn to be boarded!! We absolutely loved the place!

Please, please if you go there remember to clean up behind your dog. It never ceases to amaze me that so many people think the rules don't apply to them. You are PLAINLY told at the desk at checkin that you are to clean up behind your pet, and there are containers all over the place that should remind you of this. Also, I believe there is a $25 fine in SC if you don't clean behind your pet. But I'd take Brie to the designated area and there was poop in at least one spot most of the time when I took her out there. Funny thing - it was always from small dogs. Do these people think a little isn't as bad to step in as a lot? And at night it's dark in the designated place, so take a flashlight. The staff must have cleaned up behind these animals (I'm talking about the 2-legged ones who SHOULD be cleaning it up), because on one or two occasions I went back there and there was no poop where I had seen poop before.

So remember to keep a plastic grocery bag or something like that in your pocket.
And enjoy your stay!

Nov. 4, 2004 - The following e-mail is from N. Hoffman in Ohio:

Affordable Family Resort is an Awesome place to vacation with your pet. With lots of space to walk your dog on site, and easy access to the beach, the cabins can't be beat. Plus, the owners are wonderful and make the stay a delight! I HIGHLY recommend you check it out!

On March 26, 2003, Debra Wagoner sent me this e-mail about the Lighthouse Motel: Whenever we stay (at the Lighthouse), Bob (the manager) just quotes us rates and I don't know if they include anything special for my dogs or not. I would definitely recommend them - we stay several times a year. They are very convenient (many times we park our car and don't move it for days because we're so close to everything!), the staff is helpful and the place is clean. The Lighthouse Restaurant on the Pier has the best breakfast in town. It isn't the Ritz by any means, but when we want to sit on our balcony and watch thesunset and cuddle our dogs, it's the only place we'll stay in Myrtle!

On March 11, 2003, I received this message from Norma Thomason: We stayed at the Vancouver last year because it was pet friendly. We won't stay again. It wasn't the money but instead most everything in the room was broken and water ran from upstairs down on the AC unit the whole time and the manager didn't seem to care. The upkeep on the ocean front area was awful. Trash was everywhere and left there all week. The room wasn't cleaned until late in the afternoon. My husband stayed with our Yorkie and I went to the beach. We were on a schedule to be cleaned at 9:00 am. Please consider whether you want your animal exposed to this.
This one is from "Christine" concerning their experience with The Mariner:
"I spent a few days (without my pooches unfortunately) at the Mariner and thought it was a wonderful small motel. They even have a doggie social on Thursday evenings!"

And yet another Mariner fan...
2/12/2003 - Hi! Just wanted to write and let you know about my weekend in Myrtle Beach. My husband and I went down Sunday-Tuesday for the US Foods show at the convention center. I found your website while searching for Myrtle Beach info last week. We traveled with our 70 pound lab, so we were seeking pet friendly accommodations. Because of your website, we decided on The Mariner. We were very pleased with our stay here! We checked in, the rooms were very nice, as was the staff. Because it is off season we got an excellent rate on the room, and took advantage of the heated pool our first night. Abagail (our dog) was also very excited about staying in the room with us, and getting to play in the ocean! We shopped at Barefoot Landing, which is also pet friendly, as long as your pet is well behaved. Abagail dined on treats from Bone Appetit, a pet bakery at Barefoot Landing, and we walked around from shop to shop until the sun went down. All in al our trip was very enjoyable. I went to Myrtle Beach every summer when I was a child, but have not visited in 11 years! I showed my husband, a first time visitor, all of the hotels we used to stay at, and the pavilion area. It was a pleasant trip down memory lane, and it will not be the last, thanks to your website!

Here's another happy visitor to The Mariner :
04/25/01.....My teen sons and I enjoy many long weekends at Myrtle Beach.  With the newest addition to our family having fur and four legs, we thought these kind of trips were things of the past.  Luckily, we discovered the Mariner.  The staff does everything possible to assure your visit goes well.  The rooms, although older, are nicely furnished and impeccably clean.  My "pampered pooch" is not only accepted, but is welcomed.  It should be noted that the Mariner does not permit smoking in the rooms or on the premises.  This is strictly enforced.  My teenagers, my dog, and I all agree, The Mariner is one of Myrtle Beach's best kept secrets. Sincerely, Susan Parsons & "Cassie"

Here's one from a visitor who stayed at The Sportsman:
09/04/01 ....Hi, we just got back from Myrtle Beach with our 20 pound jr.terrier. We stayed at the Sportsman Motor Lodge. Well, let me start by saying upon checking in you have this huge list of pet rules. OK. Then everything is cash up front. OK. Then you have to give a ten dollar key deposit for 2 keys which is not advertised. OK plus a 50 dollar deposit on a credit card that is not refundable until you check out and the maid reports. OK. We left the room without a trace of anybody being there. Lets hope my deposit is refunded. Also, they give you no 'do not disturb signs' and the maids start knocking at 8:30 am. Our first day there, we left for an hour and found a note on our door to take our dog with us or board him - he barks too much. He is 4 years old and we have traveled all over the states. This is the first time we ever had a complaint. There is a clause in the pet rules you sign that management has right to ask you to leave with no refund. We went to the store and bought a muzzle. Our poor dog looked so depressed, we returned the muzzle to the pet store and got him a big juicy bone instead. For the rest of our stay, every time we left and came back I would say" Good. No note." Also, I want to say we take our dog for at least 5 walks a day on vacation, plus car rides around town. The manager tried telling me that he could not even rent a room because our dog barked. Also, we had to by our own tissues they dont provide. Oh yeah - when we went to get our key deposit back we only got 3.00 back because of 8oo#s we dialed locally! The pool was nice, the place was clean. All in all we had a good time. We would rate this a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10.
