I left work today around 4:00 and did not look back....IT"S TIME!!! We leave tomorrow afternoon for Columbia and then Saturday morning we will make the short trip to Myrtle Beach. I will try my best to give daily updates on my trip report since I really enjoy reading all the other trip reports. We've got a lot of packing to do tomorrow, but vacation has already began for me.

We finally left home around 3:00 and arrived in Columbia just a little before 7. We checked in the hotel and went straight to dinner. We ate at Carolina Ale House which was just down the street from our hotel. The atmosphere was great as was the food and I got to watch a little of the US Open. After dinner we headed back to the hotel relax and get some sleep.

Day 1 - 6/16 - We left Columbia at 9:00 and arrived in MB right around noon, just in time for lunch. We downed our lunch and then headed straight to Island Vista with hopes of getting to get in the condo early. Luckily it had already been cleaned and the owner was okay with us getting to check in early. We unloaded the minivan quickly and changed, it was now time for the beach!
Saturday afternoon the weather was very nice, it wasnt too hot and the water felt great. Since were able to check in early, I felt like this was bonus beach time for us and we took advantage of it. After a few hours on the beach, we cleaned up and drove to Murrell's Inlet for dinner at Creek Ratz. I had the Shrimp Po Boy and it was as good as I remembered it being when we had eaten here a few years ago. We stayed for a while to listen to the band play and after a few songs we had to leave....we still had grocery shopping to do. Yes, there are long lines at Food Lion at 10:00 on a Saturday night. We loaded up on groceries and made our way back to the condo. It had been a full day and we were all ready for some rest.

Day 2 - 6/17 - I woke up this morning to sunny skies and the beach, it just doesnt get any better than that. After my morning coffee and a bowl of cheerios, we were ready for the beach. The morning was spent mainly just relaxing on the beach and I even got my wife to join me in a game of bocci ball. It warmed up pretty nice, but not too hot this afternoon and the water was much calmer today. My kids had a good catching sand crabs and whatever else they could find. And yes, they did release them so no harm was done to any marine life.
The day got even better. I am a huge baseball fan, so for Father's Day, my wife and kids took me to the Pelicans game tonight. I had never been to a game here and I have to say that I was very impressed with the ballpark and the gameday experience as a whole. The fireworks after the game were very good and the kids got to run the bases after the game. Needless to say, it was a great Father's Day.

What a great start to your vacation (and trip report)! Thanks so much for sharing with us. I have yet to go to a Pelicans game and I always hear so much positive about it!

Can't wait to read more!

Love these "Live" trip reports ! :nanner:

I was originally puzzled you would stop just 3 hrs from Myrtle... my adrenalin would have pushed me through. But seeing you had a quick drive the following day and be fresh for an "extra beach day" makes great sense.

Kelly works with the Special Olympics and learned bocci. Sounds like a great beach sport !

Day 3 - 6/18 - Today was more of the same. Great weather and more time to enjoy the beach. After spending another tough day at the beach and pool, we had worked up an appetite, so it was time for our other favorite thing to do in Myrtle Beach....eat!
Tonight we decided to try River City Cafe in Surfside Beach. It hit the spot. We had eaten at River City Cafe at Sand Dunes ( I think that is correct) and it was just okay, but this location was much better. I love being able to have dinner and look at the ocean....I can't do that at home!
So after dinner, we stopped by the boardwalk on the way back. We had never been and I also wanted to get a closer look at the Sky Wheel. It was much taller than I expected to be once I got right up next to it. We explored the boardwalk and ended up in front of the Bowery where there was an Elvis impersonator performing, so we stopped to watch for a few minutes. The guy could work a crowd, he even pulled my mother-in-law out of the crowd and got her to dance with him. At first she did not look like she wanted to be out there, but she was a good sport about the whole thing. Elvis then proceeded to kiss my wife on the cheek...the look on her face was priceless! So after all of this, it was time to head back to the quite side of Myrtle Beach....just too much excitement for one night!

Heath, thank you so much for sharing your vacation with all of us here on the board. It means a lot to everyone when people take the time to do this. And since it's LIVE, all the better!

Glad you are enjoying yourselves, and I think its wonderful that Elvis singled out your MIL. That's really special! She will remember and talk about this to all her friends.

I agree Patrish, I think the live trip reports are the way to go. Plus, it is easier to remember everything this way.

Day 4 - 6/19 - The daytime hours were spent today much like the previous days....on the beach and a little time in the pool. Later on in the afternoon I walked out in the ocean about knee deep and I noticed a ray swimming about five feet from me. He was small, but it was really neat to see one that close up right there on the beach. Earlier in the day we saw several dolphins from balcony as we were eating breakfast. It was a good day for spotting wild life I guess.
For dinner we thought we would try Mr. Fish, since I have heard so many good things about it on this message board. I'm glad we gave it a try, it was very good and reasonably priced. We only had to wait about 10 minutes before we were seated. I had the California Grouper Sandwich and it was pretty tasty.
After dinner we headed down Kings Highway to play 18 at Mt. Atlanticus. We didn't keep score but we had a great time. I even had 5 hole-in-ones. It was very crowded, but once we got through the first few holes we seemed to be able to play through without waiting too long.
On the way back to our condo the strangest thing happened. As were riding down Kings Highway, our minivan was sucked into the Krispy Kreme parking lot. Once we realized what had happened we decided since we were there that we would go ahead and get a dozen to take back with us. What a way to end a great evening.

We love Mt. Atlanticus but there is no way we could play without keeping score. Even if we tried each of us would keep the score in our head and whoever was winning would be sure to let the others know. We are just a bit too competative.

Sounds like ya'll are having a great time.

I'd have definitely kept score had I gotten 5 HIO's!

Hilarious! I was prepared for something entirely different. It is actually a phenomenon in MB. Nobody knows what causes it. It's kind of like the Bermuda triangle. You have not control. Your body, vehicle & soul are sucked into the Netherworld known as Cripsy Creme!

Day 5 - 6/20 - The day started off somewhat cloudy this morning and then the clouds seem to build as the morning went. Not long after lunch we were out on the beach and even felt a few rain drops, but that was it. After that it started to clear up and the sun came out for the rest of the afternoon.
My son and I were in about knee deep water and we noticed these small fish that the best way I can describe them was they looked like really small sharks about 3 inches long. I'm not really sure what they were, but we had fun trying our best to catch them in our nets. The water was pretty calm until about mid afternoon when the waves kicked in and we really couldnt see much after that.

For dinner, we went to Friendly's. The kids always like to eat there every year, mainly because they get ice cream with their kids meals. So went there and then afterwards we went to a couple of beach stores and then back to the condo and we made it back just in time to go out on the beach watch the fireworks. The fireworks were really good, even from way down on our end of the beach.

I did not get a chance to get online Thursday and last night we were packing, so.....here is the rest of my trip report.

Day 6 - 6/21 - This was probably the best beach day of the way. It was warm when i got up and I knew it was going to be a hot day. My son and I rode waves on our boogie boards, built a big sand castle, and just had an awesome day at the beach.

Later on, we rode back down to Murrell's Inlet and had dinner at Dead Dog Saloon. It is really amazing that they were able to rebuild in such a short amount of time. It seemed bigger to me. The inside was much more open and the outside dining area seemed bigger too. We sat out on the deck overlooking the marshwalk and listened to some live music. And, we had some hushpuppies, which are really awesome if you have never had them. After dinner, we stopped by the Lazy Gator just down the street and looked around for a bit. Also, there is a little ice cream shop right next door, so we just had to check that out too. The ice cream was good and it was a great way to end another day at the beach.

Day 7 - 6/22 - It was finally here....the dreaded last day at the beach. We made the most of it, staying out on the beach until about 5:00 or so. We decided we would eat somwhere close, so we went to Cheeseburger in Paradise. As always, it was very good. Afterwards, we were starting to feel a little depressed knowing that this was our last night in MB, so we thought we would try out The Donut Man on 2nd Ave. I have to say that I was just as good as Krispy Kreme. We were all stuffed at this point and decided to head back to the condo and get started on the packing. We packed up most everything we had in the minivan except for a few things that we would need for the morning.

Day 8 - 6/23 - We left Myrtle Beach this morning at 7:30. I always hate leaving, it has to be the most depressing day of the year for me, but on a positive note we will be back in just 357 days!
