Hello all,
I am new to this site and so far all the information I am seeing has been so helpful! My family and I live in Western Pa. My husband(Kenny) is a CDL Truck Driver and he works local at the stone quarries(no over the road). I am a stay at home Mom but, I bake from home and that helps bring in extra money. We are planning a trip in March to Myrtle Beach to look into jobs, housing ect.....we want to make our dream come true of living in the Myrtle Beach area.
We would love to be there by June so our girls could finish out the school year here and then make a fresh start in Myrtle Beach when school starts after summer vacation.
My question is, Is it realistic to think moving our family down to Myrtle Beach before we have jobs is a good idea? (we will have enough money saved to sign a 6 month lease) and then pay bills for 3 months.
My husband has alot of construction exp. and also heavy equipment, and like I said he has his CDL. I am not too worried about me finding work because I am sure I can find something in a hotel, store, bakery ect.
How is the jobs in the area? Kenny is not opposed to looking out of his work experience field either.
Thanks for any help you could give and like I said we are open to anything!

Cori

well the rents are low so that will help, Why not send resumes out right now to the trucking industry people and see what you get back ....Also check
with the Major trucking and stone quarry industry people by mail or email or via telephone...I think you would make out better sending feelers per say.

Look at the Myrtle Beach area help wanted and such too....

We hope all goes well.....

Being that you have children of school age, I would not make the move here
without having a confirmed job. The job market here is not that great and folks
make a lot less money than up north for the same work.

Many folks have moved here only to go broke, end up divorced, on drugs and
the list goes on, including calling family to send them money to get back home.

I know this is not what you wish to hear, yet it is the reality of this area.

Be very careful in planning a drastic life style change such as you are considering.

Hi Gary,

For sure we have thought about that...that is why my husband will be going down to secure work before moving the family. I do not think it would be a smart move at all to do it any other way. We are a strong family and have been married for 16 years. We are looking to better our life for our family and move to an area that has alot more things to offer us at this time.
It is a very big life changing thing and we are being smart about it. This is not just a spur of a moment thing, this is years of thinking and visiting and a dream that will one day hopefully very soon come true.

So, if you hear of any good jobs keep us posted! :)

Thanks so much for the advice......Have a great day!

Cori

While Gary has some points well worth considering, I've known several people who moved here without jobs and they are doing quite well now. (One of them had 3 young children.)

You seem to be on top of everything, and there's a lot to be said for people who have the guts and determination to follow their dream. Dwight, who joined the message board before they moved here, gave you some good advice, too.

I googled construction jobs in Myrtle Beach as well as CDL Truck Drivers, and a lot of job offerings came up.

Patrish is right...many people do it with fantatsic results.

It is very hard to get someone to consider you if you do not have a local address. We came through a large company transfer but my husband has since left that job after many years with them. He was offered oppurtunities we would have never known about had we not been here.

This move ...almost five years later has been wonderful for us.
