Left Vandalia yesterday morning and stayed in Cornelius, NC last night. Three different slowdowns on I-77 kept us from making good time but we arrived safely and that's what matters. Aaron has done a lot of the driving which has been a blessing to me. Met Rich (Shirtman) and Cathy for dinner there and had a great time! It's always so good to see them. Arrived in Myrtle Beach late this morning and went to our friend Rowena's for lunch and a visit and are now at our hotel. Plans for tonight are dinner at Big Daddy's Roadhouse and then relaxing on the balcony. We are so happy to be here and are looking forward to the meet-up Tuesday.

Sunday: Went to Christ United Methodist Church with Leo, Charlotte, Brett, Katie and the girls. Wonderful service. They invited us to join them at the Olive Garden for lunch and we enjoyed it very much. Thank you so much for including us. Heavy thunderstorm rolled through in mid-afternoon so no beach time for us. In the evening we met Lew & Pat (Beachlivin) at the 2nd. Ave. Pier and had a great visit. The view from the Pier View bar is spectacular and their bar apps are really good. If you haven't checked it out yet, do so. You won't be disappointed!

Monday: Went back to the 2nd Ave. Pier and had breakfast with our friend Rowena at the Pier View Restaurant. Great breakfast! Aaron & Kay took a beach walk and I just sat in my chair and enjoyed watching the ocean. It was already over 90 degrees so we didn't stay out too long. Took a drive down to Murrell's Inlet in the afternoon and then drove up to Cherry Grove and had dinner at Duffy Street Seafood Shack. Thanks Alan (pop2478) for introducing us to this great restaurant. Love their food! We're now back at our hotel and in for the evening. It's been a great day. Looking forward to the meet-up tomorrow night.

Glad you guys enjoyed it enough to go back. They do have another location down on Restuarant Row that would save you some drive time next time.
You might be like us. If you're going to eat a place called the shack. Might as well eat at the one that looks like a shack.

Vicki, it sounds like you are having a great time. I am really enjoying your trip report. It sounds as if you have more friends in the MB area than I do in my home area (lol). Hope you are having fun at the meet-up this evening. Looking forward to the next installment of your trip report.

Tuesday: WOW is it hot & humid! Like Cathy said, doesn't make for a "good" hair day! We decided to make this a shopping day so we went up to Tanger's north for our annual shoe shopping at Sketcher's. Between the three of us we bought five pairs. They always love to see us coming! Also had to hit the kitchen store for some gadgets. Drove out to Market Common in the afternoon so Aaron could get some things for Ashley at Bath & Body Works that she can't get at home. Dropped him off and drove around (and around and around) the block while he shopped. Aaron & Kay walked down to the 2nd. Ave. Pier for a beer before we went to the meet-up. Had a blast at the meet-up. Seeing Wally & Patrish was, as always, a special part of our trip. And Rich & Cathy? What can I say, these are two of our favorite people. I was also so glad that our friends from home, Bernice, Jim & their grandson Evan were there. Even though we see them often at home, it's still special to get together in our favorite place.

Wednesday: Enjoyed our breakfast at Omega Pancake House in Surfside. We found this restaurant last fall. Their breakfast is really good! Aaron wanted to go the Aquarium so we dropped him off and let him enjoy it on his own. I think he spent about three hours there. We met up with him at Build-A-Bear where I was going to make Ashley a stuffed animal as her souvenier from us but the line was so long that we decided to get there early on Friday morning. I guess I'm getting old because I didn't want to wait in line for and hour and a half. Walked through a few other shops then came back to the hotel to get ready for dinner at Inlet Crab House in Murrell's Inlet. We went there especially so that Aaron could get his fill of steamed clams but, alas, the had run out. We're now back in our room for the evening. Since it's fireworks night we wanted to make sure we got back early so we'd be sure to have a place to park. Usually it's no problem, but for some reason this year the parking is tight.

BTW Alan, we love the "shack" atmosphere at Duffy's in Cherry Grove but I don't think we'll try it again on a 95 degree day! The food was great as always but with no air conditioning, it wasn't the best dining experience. We'll definitely go back in the fall when it's cooler.

Judy - We're are so fortunate to have made so many friends here in Myrtle Beach over the last 26 years. They are the main we come back year after year. The beach is a bonus!

So far, the trip has been great! More to come.

Vicki, Kay & Aaron

Decided to wait until we got home to do the final installment of our trip report.

Thursday: Aaron decided he wanted to sleep in this morning so Kay & I went to breakfast by ourselves at National House of Pancakes. Came back to the room & picked him up and went to Coastal Grand Mall before going to our friends Dixie & Betty's for lunch. They served us a feast of pulled pork, slaw, baked beans and cheesecake for desert. One of the best meals we had during our trip. They used to own a restaurant and really know how to make great food! They really went out of their way to make it special for us. :notworthy: Spent the afternoon with them playing a few games of pool and just getting caught up since our visit last fall. Took Rowena with us for a ride on the Skywheel late in the afternoon. What a great experience. We all agreed that this is a "must do" when we come back in September. This time we're going to ride it at night.

Friday: After breakfast at Paradise Pancake & Omelet House, we went out to BATB and finally made a stuffed animal at Build-A-Bear for Ashley. Best time to get there is when they open at 10:00 AM. No waiting at all. Looked through a few shops and decided we wanted to go to Callahan's in Calabash so took a drive up there and shopped awhile. I absolutely love that store. So many tempting things to purchase but only came away with some candy and a bookmark for our neighbor. We still had our Restaurant.com gift certificate to use at Thorny's so we went there for dinner. As always, it was so good! Best ribeye steak I've had in a long time. Aaron had chicken and Kay had ribs. Went to Rowena's to visit one last time before heading back to the hotel to pack up the van for an early (6:00 AM) departure. Sat on our balcony for awhile before heading to bed.

Saturday: We wanted to get an early start as we wanted to stop in Charlotte to visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Kay & I went last year but we wanted Aaron to experience it and he loved it. For those of you who are NASCAR fans, it is definitely worth checking out. So much to see and do that is "hands on". It's in downtown Charlotte and is very easy to find. Parking is next door and very convenient. We left there about noon and decided to drive on home instead of stopping over night. Had the usual traffic backup just south of Wytheville. Aaron did all the driving from Charlotte home which was a big help to me. We arrived in Vandalia at 9:00 PM tired but glad to be back in our own beds.

This was a great trip filled with fun and friends. The very best kind! Aaron is working two jobs (one full-time, one part-time) and going to school so this trip was as much for him as for us. He really needed this time away and I'm so glad he came along. Even though he lives with us, we don't get to spend much time with him since he's always on the go and we were able to do it this trip. Hope you enjoyed following along with us on our adventure and we can't wait to go back in September for two weeks.

Vicki, Kay & Aaron
