I have been putting off writing this trip report, but when I got up this morning to everything covered in snow, I had to let my mind travel to Myrtle Beach. What a winter this one has been! Lucky us escaping for March.
We left our home town early on the morning of February 27th. Always a joy to see snow in the rearview mirror. Our first night was spent in Marietta, Ohio after a long day on the road. Up early and arrived in Florence, South Carolina for the night. We find it easier to arrive in North Myrtle Beach the morning and have the day to get settled in. My sister and her hubby were scheduled to arrive from their home in Florida that day. They were staying with us for 6 days. We booked into our condo at Mar Vista and were barely there an hour and they arrived. She was as anxious to see me as I was to see her. Too funny. We got settled in and went for groceries. We were all tired from the trip so we just had a lazy day that lasted for the next day as well. Swimming in the indoor pool and loosening up the old bodies in the hot tub. Then off to Benjamin's for crablegs.
On Thursday, we went to Hamburger Joe's for lunch. I won't elaborate on the restaurant experiences, as I did reviews on each spot we went. We enjoyed the indoor pool and hot tub again and just got caught up and enjoyed dinner in.I love to cook and prepared a pork tenderloin with apple, cranberry and cinnamon stuffing which we enjoyed with a glass (or two) of wine and continued to enjoy each other's company.
Friday morning we went to the Golden Griddle in North Myrtle Beach for brekkie. I can't say enough about this place for the great breakfast. Always fast, always hot and always good! The wait staff is excellent and they put people through so quickly it is amazing. Like Judy's husband with Harry's, my husband would eat here every morning. It was cool out so we shopped and then had a swim.
Saturday we went to the musicfest at La Belle Amie Vineyard. Always one of our favourite things to do when we are down. Such a great way to spend the day. They have a live band, food vendors and beer and wine. All you need is a lawn chair to enjoy the day but they do have some folding chairs available if you need them. There is a dance floor if you like to dance or it is fun to watch. Some of the folks are awesome dancers. I love watching them shag and they also get a huge gang up for line dancing. They have 2 winefests in March. This one had all 50's and 60's music. We had a great day. Our company left for Florida the next morning. Hopefully we will see them this summer.
Monday was a day off and we had more company arrive on Tuesday, friends from home. They stopped in for a few days on their way to Florida. They were doing the Disney thing with the kids and grandkids. We had a few lazy days together although we did make a trip up to Calabash to Callahan's. We did the indoor pool thing and I cooked and we just spent a few days visiting. They left early Friday morning.
We went down to the outdoor pool on Friday to just chillax. Suddenly, I heard my name called and what a surprise. A couple from our home town! They were both teachers at the school where I work. He then became principal of our local highschool. We always got along well with them but when they retired they moved away and over the years we lost touch. What a pleasant surprise and what are the odds that they would be in our building for the month of March also. We were picking our friends up at the airport the next day and she was the secretary at the other local school in our small town and knew this couple as well. Another teacher from my school arrived that day with her family for March Break. Needless to say that was one fun pool party on Saturday when we were all together.
Sunday we went to the Golden Griddle with our friends and continued to visit at the pool for the day. The weather was awesome!
On Monday, March 14, we headed down to the boardwalk. Our friends had never seen the new boardwalk. It was cool but sunny. We walked down to the 2nd Ave. Pier. I wanted to check it out for our meet-up. I knew that Scott and Denise were planning on coming and that she was on crutches. I had never been there before and wanted to make sure she would be able to manage okay. No problem as they have an elevator. A great plus for those who need one. It started to rain so we went in and had breakfast. We really enjoyed it and ever though it was dark, rainy, cool and windy the view was great. By the time we left the rain had stopped but it was cold! That was one fast walk back to the truck! We then drove up to Broadway at the Beach. We weren't sure what it would be like but it was so strange. On the drive there it got a lot lighter and we realized that the dark cloud down by the ocean was indeed fog and it was sunny and beautiful up at BATB. We were glad we went and enjoyed our day. We stopped at Benjamin's for dinner on the way home. My company always loves to go to Benjamin's. Good thing for me I love crablegs and the 2 for 1 coupon in March is hard to pass up.
Tuesday morning we had a quick breakfast and headed down to Brookgreen Gardens. It was a beautiful day and we all enjoyed it. There were more flowers out than we thought we would see and we got some great pictures. When we got home I threw some chicken in the oven and we went for a swim. Wednesday was a pool day with fajitas for dinner.
Thursday we went down to Georgetown. We have always wanted to go, but had never made it. We went on a tour of the Kaminski House and the house next store. It was well worth it. The docent was very informative and the history surrounding the house was very interesting. We then went down to the water and strolled down the walkway. It was a great day with lots of sun and felt hotter than 70 degrees. We stopped at Buzz's Roost for lunch on their top deck overlooking the water. Rueben's and green beer for St. Patrick's Day. We then went on a tram tour around Georgetown with Swamp Fox Tours. Also very enjoyable and very informative. We headed home and stopped at California Dreaming for dinner. One of our favourite places and we weren't disappointed. We plan to go back to Georgetown to see all we missed.
Friday was a wonderful, sunny day. We had to go to the airport to pick up our two daughters. We came back and had another pool party. My daughters were so surprised to see the couple that had moved away. It was a great day and we just picked up pizza's at Basil's in Cherry Grove for dinner.
Saturday we took in another musicfest. This one is the Big Band musicfest and a good time was had by all. We grabbed food there and went back to the condo for a quick swim then took our friends to the airport.
Sunday my girls wanted to shop so we did the outlet mall thing and hit a couple of other spots, grabbed a quick lunch and headed back to the pool. We wanted to take it cool because we we going to Brookgreen Gardens for the day on Monday. One of my daughters in an amateur photographer so we knew it would be a long day with her and her camera.
Wednesday I received a phone call from my daughter in law. She was in Myrtle Beach with her mom. It was a spur of the moment thing. Unfortunately my son and grandson didn't come as he had to work and she had to take these holidays or lose them. They came over and we all enjoyed the pool and I almost couldn't believe it when they said they wanted to go to Benjamin's for crablegs. Three trips there in one month! Okay now I am crablegged out!!
Thursday we were invited out to a friend's place. They are from Detroit and we only see them in Myrtle Beach. It isn't easy to find time between our company and theirs.
Friday we did last minute shopping and took the girls to the airport. The last of our company gone. Whew! Saturday I threw a roast in the crockpot and we just let out a sigh.
Sunday we had our meet-up with Scott, Denise, Patrish and Wally. We meet at 2nd. Ave Pier and had a lovely dinner and a better visit. The six of us had a meet-up last year so it was great that it worked out that we could see each other again. We are lucky to have a meet-up in March. Meet-ups are awesome and I would encourage everyone to try to make it to one. It is hard when you only have so much time on a holiday, but it is so nice to put a face to a name and then when you meet again the next year it is like meeting old friends. How many people have Patrish and Wally met over the years? They really put themselves out to attend these meet-ups. Great folks!
On Monday we had leftovers and Tuesday we had friends over for a last hurrah.Wednesday we spent on last minute shopping and hitting the beach stores for odds and ends. We went to the Carolina Roadhouse for dinner. The meal was great. Thursday morning we went to Golden Griddle for brekkie and packed up the truck. You can imagine how much I bring for a month! We grabbed a quick burger at Hamburger Joe's for dinner and hit the hay early. Leaving early in the morning.
We had an awesome month. When we left Mar Vista we booked for next year but the good news is that I am retiring at the end of June so we were able to book for 3 months, January, February and March. Funny how the older you get the uglier winter seems. Hard to believe that I actually did enjoy crosscountry skiing, tobogganing, ice skating and snowshoeing in my day. We both can't wait to spend the winter down there. Like everyone else on this board we love Myrtle Beach!
