We are coming down in a year or so and want to live in a gated community. Can someone tell me what they are?

Hello, donnarama. Welcome to our message board! Are you interested in knowing WHAT a gated community is or WHERE they are?

Basically, a gated community has either a live person or an electronic box that will accept an owner's card. The gates are closed to anyone without proper identification.

If you are wanting to know where the gated communities are, I need more information since there are huge numbers of them available.

Do you want to rent or purchase? Are you looking for a single family home, apartment or condo? Do you want to be located on or near a golf course? Schools?

Do you know which area you want to consider? The "Grand Strand" is often referred to as "Myrtle Beach" but it is actually an area that stretches 60 miles from Little River in the North End to Murrells Inlet in the South. The most popular areas for living are the City of North Myrtle Beach, the City of Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Garden City Beach, Murrells Inlet and many, many housing communities in between that are located in either Horry or Georgetown counties, not designated as cities.

If you google "myrtle beach gated communities" (without the quote marks) you will see about 200,000 listings. You can narrow that number to about 15,000 listings by typing in "surfside beach, sc, gated communities for sale" again without the quotation marks.

So please help out here with some specific information, and either I, or others on the board, should be able to help you better.

Thanks for responding. I was looking for a listing of gated communities in the myrtle beach area. Probably from Little River to the Carolina Forrest area. Private homes for purchase.

Donnarama,
probably the best thing you could do is get hooked up with a local realtor.
I'm sure a few people on the forum could recommend one. one thing with a gated community is that you can't just ride around and look at houses because of the gate.

we ended up in Prestwick in the Myrtle Beach / surfside area which is a gated community with a great (Imho) golf course. since this is not a full time house for us yet i really liked the idea of the guard at the gate restricting some of the traffic to residents and guests.

i did notice a lot of communities that are set up for a gated entrance but no guard or gate was in place.

Charlie is right. If you are looking for a single-family home, it would be best to contact a Realtor who specializes in the areas you're interested in seeing. That way, you can be sure you'll see homes that fit your price range, without the hassle of getting through a gate. You can also be selective as to what kind of gates are used (human or electronic) and whether they are manned 24-7 or only during certain times.

The larger Real Estate companies such as Century 21, Coldwell-Banker and RE/MAX for instance, have agents who specialize in different areas. If you know anyone in Real Estate where you are living now, they may be able to put you in touch with someone in this area. My husband, Wally Snider, is with Coldwell Banker Chicora. He does not specialize in Little River or Carolina Forest, but he would be able to recommend someone who could help you. Just identify yourself as being from the message board. His cell is 843-267-2000.

If you still want to look around on your own, google the areas you're interested in with search terms such as gated community, homes, Carolina Forest Myrtle Beach, Little River etc. etc.

I thought realtor.com might be a good resource for you, but although it gives you many search options, gated communities isn't one of them.

I live in a somewhat gated community in Prince Creek...it is open during the day but has a gate and a person after dark. There are some neighboor hoods in Prince creek that are gated all the time and some with none. Over all I feel pretty safe in my subdivision regardless of the gate.

Windjammer Village is a gated community in Little River, just a mile or so from the North Carolina Border. They even have a website that you can get on to check out homes for sale.

http://www.windjammerpoa.com/homes.htm

Hope this helps!

I have a funny gate story from this week....John took John Blue to school on Friday so I didn't leave the house to almost nine am and when I walked out of the house a line of like 45 cars were coming into the neighborhhood...I usually dont see 45 cars in a whole week!...well I finally realized that someone was having a yard sale and all the people were waiting for the gate to open to come in! LOL

Howdy,

We just bought a house near Socastee in the Cypress River Plantation development which is a gated community. The area is very nice and we got a great deal on a brand new all brick house. I agreed with others that you should contact a local real estate agent and we used Don Clark from the Century 21/Broadhurst agency and we were very happy with him.

More info on Cypress River can be found here:

http://www.cypressriverpoa.com/outside_home.asp

It's still pretty much a buyer's market down here so shop around & do your homework and you should get a good deal.

Good luck with your home search.
