Hi All.. Leaving for MB in 9 days! whoo-hoo!
Staying at Beach Colony resort from 20th to 27th .. wondering if there is anything cool for teens to do. Someone once told me (on another forum a while back) that there were bands at night (this would be great) but it was way down more south of the main area..(hmmm I think it was Garden City Pier?, can't remember offhand.) So is there anything like that type of evening beach entertainment closer to either the main MB area, or better yet, a little more north, closer to Beach Colony? .. or whatever other suggestions you might have for teens? .. My kids are 14 and 11.
Thanks! Tracy

whoop, guess that might matter huh..
My daughter is 14, son is 11.
I love the idea of seeing beachfront live music that they have at the end of Garden City Pier every night.. (but that's waaay too far away) .. something like that would be something we all would enjoy. .. or some other evening entertainment that isn't too cheesy or lame; something to do after dinner that's outdoors...
Otherwise if there's nothing entertaining to do, the kids will likely head back to the room after dinner and my son will be on his PSP and my daughter on MSN. !! (anyone with kids that age will relate!)

Just reading an online copy of The Strand magazine, it says under Ocean Blvd Attractions: Free twilight concerts, Wednesday night fireworks over the ocean, family oriented street performers, bright neon lights and the smell of salt air, funnel cakes and cotton candy are all part of the charm on this original strip of Americana. Ok this is the kind of thing I'm looking for. Does anyone know if these twilight concerts are every night? .. Wed night fireworks sounds great. Whereabouts on Ocean blvd is all this going on?

The concerts are only on Tuesday and Saturday nights, at Plyler Park (intersection of Ocean Blvd and 10th Ave North/"Mr Joe White Blvd").

I made it to one of them during a work assignment - pretty nice crowd and atmosphere. I'll prepare a few photos and perhaps a video when I can and post them as a new response.

Here is the official City of Myrtle Beach information and link with the details on that - and many other special summer activities.

---------------------------------

Downtown Entertainment Schedule

Music, Fireworks and Kids Carnivals!

Summer of 2009

Plyler Park and Ocean Boulevard

The Oceanfront Merchants Association and the City of Myrtle Beach will sponsor a summer full of music, entertainment and fireworks downtown! Plyler Park, on Ocean Boulevard at Mr. Joe White Avenue, will be the scene for musical concerts every Tuesday and Saturday with extra concerts for the July 4 and Labor Day weekends. Fireworks will light the sky every Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. from the Second Avenue Pier (weather permitting). The fireworks show is visible along much of the coast, but makes for a neat experience on the beach and Ocean Boulevard. New for this year will be Kids Carnivals from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. every Monday beginning June 8 and running through August 17. The carnivals will include bounce houses, cotton candy, bungee run, street performers, scavenger hunts and music on the P.A. system.

Plyler Park Concert Schedule (8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.)
Saturday, June 27… Black Label (Rocky, Classic & Today)

Tuesday, June 30… Tru Sol (Motown, Funk, Rhythm & Blues)

Thursday, July 2… The Jessie Rice Project (Rock, Classic & Country)

Friday, July 3… Jah Creations (Reggae)

Saturday, July 4… Painted Man (Funk, Dance, Rhythm & Blues)

Tuesday, July 7… Ten Toes Up (Southern Rock, Classic & Today)

Saturday, July 11… Hot Sauce (Funk, Pop, Rhythm & Blues)

Tuesday, July 14… Tru Sol (Motown, Funk, Rhythm & Blues)

Saturday, July 18… Gogglez Pizano (Top 40, Variety)

Tuesday, July 21… Ten Toes Up (Southern Rock, Classic & Today)

Saturday, July 25… Super Glide (70’s & 80”s, Classic Rock)

Tuesday, July 28… Tru Sol (Motown, Funk, Rhythm & Blues)

Saturday, August 1… Jah Creations (Reggae)

Tuesday, August 4… Ten Toes Up (Southern Rock, Classic & Today)

Saturday, August 15… Superswamp Heroes (Classic Rock & Modern Country)

Friday, September 4… Soul Function (Party, Funk, Rhythm & Blues)

Saturday, September 5… Hot Sauce (Funk, Pop, Rhythm & Blues)

Everyone also will enjoy fireworks each Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. from the Second Avenue Pier! An additional date for fireworks is Saturday, July 4.

Wow, Mike, thanks so much!..!! Awesome information !
We'll be there from Mon to Mon 20-27 so we'll be able to head over there and see the bands 2x. Fireworks too. I'm getting a little bit off my own topic though by asking, what's the parking in that area like? I'm assuming it's nuts. We're staying at Beach Colony so it's 3 miles away; a short jaunt in the car but too far to walk. I don't mind walking a bit, (like a mile at most) to avoid the crowds if it's crazy. Any advice on where/how far away to park?

I don't know anything about this place, other than it is a nightclub for teens.

You could spend an evening at Family Kingdom riding the rides.

I'd read this post last night but was preparing for work and didn't have time to respond then.

As far as parking, here are some options:

For public parking, there are quite a few metered spaces either along 9th Ave North (beside Ripley's Museum) between Ocean Blvd and Kings Highway/Business 17. There are also quite a few metered spaces along Withers Drive (the alley-like street that runs just behind Ocean Boulevard toward Kings Highway) in that area. I note that - although I call it “alley-like” - it is quite active, far from desolate, and with a heavy police presence regarding any personal safety and security concerns. Or you could consider the former Pavilion parking garage at the intersection of 9th Ave North & Kings Highway/Business 17 (it is now open to the public again).

There are also several private parking lots along Withers Drive in the area as well.

Another option is to take a bus from the hotel, or any available shuttle service they may provide. As these methods always seem to change with short notice, you would probably be better off checking with the hotel before and again after arrival to see what may be available.

NOTE: I'm almost done retrieving/processing some photos and a few videos to give a "flavor" of the summer downtown experience - should have them posted sometime this afternoon...
