Hi all !

We spend Thanksgiving each year at my mothers. Jan, Kelly and I are joined by my brothers family (6 adults and one great-grandkid !).

Our challenge is my mother is now 88 so Jan and I don't want her to do anything (yet Mom still wants to.... very energetic, but getting immobile). My brother's family.... trying to be polite.... have no problem relying on my mother to cook the entire meal (and pay for it). Jan and I end up trying to cook everything, my mom wants to make a few things, the other folks reluctantly bring a few pre-made dishes which they rely on my mother to bake/cook while they go in the backyard to... whatever. Ends up being too stressful for everyone as nothing is coordinated.

"Oh, thanks for coming an hour before dinner with a side which needs to bake for 2hrs at a temp no other dishes are baking at.... how sweet".

So... this year I'm trying to figure out a stress-free Thanksgiving by having side dishes which can be made ahead of time before we drive down the day before. I'll then play traffic-cop and tell my brother's family what they need to make ahead of time and bring over warm (they live 2 miles away). But the recipes need to be easy.... this is not the most cuisine-centered family.

Sorry for bashing my loved ones  but after 5+ yrs, a positive change is needed :nanner: If anyone has family counseling advice (besides drinking heavily) :drinkin: , I'm all ears !

Thanks !

If brother lives 2 mi away, can a run be done to his house to cook/heat some dishes in his oven? That could take some stress away from your mom's kitchen. ??

I have used several recipes from this link for make-ahead dishes:

Thanks Patrish - I have been scouring these sites also.... trying to find Emmy's Cranberry relish recipe. Can't believe I didn't save it !

dbus... a very realistic, rational suggestion. Unfortunately rational doesn't enter into some of our family dynamics. Seems their house is a castle and none shall pass the moat

Here is the recipe Kirk...ENJOY!

1 1/4 cup raisins
1 1/4 cup Orange Juice
1 cup Sugar
1/4 cup white vinegar (more if you like it tarter)
1 12 oz. pkg. Cranberries (3 cups)
1 tsp. ground Ginger
1/2 cup chopped Walnuts

Over med. heat, heat raisins, orange juice, sugar, and vinegar to a boil stirring frequently. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.

Add cranberries and ginger to mix and over high heat, heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for another 10 minutes.

Remove saucepan from heat and stir in walnuts.

Let cool, cover and place in refrigerator until serving time
