Not good news

Quote:
Tuesday, August 23, 2016, 5:52 PM - Forecasters at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are expecting an increased chance of 12 to 17 named storms forming in the Atlantic Ocean this year.

The updated 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook notes a higher chance (70 per cent) for a near-normal or above-normal season, aligning with earlier predictions that this season would be the most active since 2012.

They might be right , but recent history has shown that they overestimate most years. I think that someone might be getting some money from oil companies to speculate on a higher number of storms to raise prices.

I just checked with the Nat'l Hurricane center (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/) and Gaston is a fish storm.......Invest 99L is given a 60% chance of formation into at least a tropical depression over the next 5 days. Invest 99L will almost certainly be a florida storm, crossing over South Florida into the eastern gulf where it will likely make landfall somewhere between P'cola FL and Panama City, FL.

I live on the Texas coast and know a lot about tropical systems......IMHO, the Grand strand will likely not be affected by any of these systems.

It looks like this storm, which will be named Hermine will graze the outer banks of NC as a minimal Tropical Storm with little effect on the Grand Strand. Should make for good surfing though.

Well it's over!! The absolute scariest part was when our phones went off with an emergency alert signal for Longs. There was tornado rotation in storm clouds 1 mile from our home in Route 9. We put shoes on, grabbed wallets, and followed directions about sheltering in a closet. We live north. We have blizzards but no tornados! My heart was pounding so hard I thought I would pass out. Thank God we were alerted it passed without touching down. Was NOT fun. Like Paul said the entire area of SC and the tornado finds us!!

Glad Y'all are safe and the storm was not too bad. I was sure this storm would stay offshore but the fact that it came up the coast inland was really kind of a blessing as that kept it from strengthening.

Glad you all are OK, Emmy! That sounds like a really scary experience...We heard on the news about a possible tornado near Longs and I immediately thought about you and your family. I hope the rest of your vacation is uneventful!

Wow! Emmy. Scary! Tornadoes are something very rare in our neck of the woods too.

Tornado warnings are scary.... we don't get many here in MD, but there was one many years back that was relatively close and it's a helpless feeling. Glad it never touched down, Emmy !
