This is in front of Apache campground in Horry county between Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach july 4, 2012 the year the tent law went into effect you can just see my yellow umbrella behind the life gaurd stand. The year before it was solid tents where that umbrella line is the life guard had to fight just to get her umbrellas up.
This would be the Shore Drive area.

Perhaps Myrtle Beach needs a traffic lane on the beach? While people can't drive on the beach, it would leave a path for emergency vehicles.

I don't care one way or another, because when we do come it will be off season. But looking at the picture from Apache campground, it shows a bunch of empty beach behind the tents that is not being used. Everyone is just crowded in a clump.

In case anyone missed the other thread:

Quote:
Myrtle Beach on Tuesday became the second Horry County entity to ban tents and all other shading devices, besides umbrellas, on the beach.

North Myrtle Beach passed a similar law last week.

Myrtle Beach City Council voted 5-1 Tuesday to ban the tents

Did write a note to City of NMB for clarification. Seems the issue might be "grounding ropes". Depending on their definition of "grounding ropes" Sport-Brella doesn't have any. Yes they have small loops around edge for stakes but they don't stretch out away from the dome creating a tripping hazard.

THIS...I didn't have much issue with the tents, per se, although the above photo did seem accurate the last time we were at SeaWatch a few years ago. The problem was I nearly broke my toe trying to maneuver through the tent maze back to the hotel and Georgia fell and nearly impaled herself, so that was when I thought...nah, I don't like these tents so much. I get their appeal, but they are a visual impairment safety wise as well as for maneuverability. I know there will be backlash, but I think like everything else...it will wane.

Horry County has passed a second reading to ban beach tents. If beach tents are banned in Horry County, the three remaining tent-friendly beaches will be in Briarcliffe Acres, Atlantic and Surfside.

"Council approved the second of three required readings on a year-round, canopy-style beach tent ban that would restrict anyone, including the 14 million tourists who visit the Grand Strand annually, from erecting a beach tent along the county’s beaches. The ban follows moves made by Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach who have passed similar ordinances recently. The council will take it third and final vote on the issue at its April 15 meeting."

I apologize if this has been posted elsewhere, but I was not able to find anything on it. Does anyone know if the canopy beach chairs fall under the same rules as standard beach umbrellas? Just wondering if they had to stay in line with the umbrellas or if they could be used closer to the water.

This is the latest news I could find (5/24.) See the RH column that says "What you need to know." The canopy chairs that I have seen look more like chairs wearing visors, and I would not think that is a problem. Everything I have found refers to tents and center poles.

Other thoughts from you locals who are keeping up with this?

Thanks for the link Patrish.

I guess we'll find out for sure when we get to the beach. Either way it doesn't matter...we'll still be at the beach.

I know the tent police are out and won't allow tents, and the umbrella nazi's are in full force and won't let people put umbrellas up in front of the city owned umbrellas, but, I wondered where all these bans were in place. I know North Myrtle and Myrtle they are not allowed, but what about Cherry Grove?

If I'm not mistaken, Cherry Grove is considered part of the North Myrtle Beach municipality thus the same laws apply. Horry County as a whole has eliminated the usage of canopies/tents on the beach (thank God). You'd have to be in Georgetown County if you want a shading device other than an umbrella.

As far as I know, Huntington Beach State Park (as well as other Georgetown County locations) still allows tents.

phroggy, why do like the banning of people using canopies or tents? I never used one myself, but I never had an issue with other people using them. The umbrella issue is a problem for me. I don't like that you can't put up an umbrella in front of the rented umbrella and chair line. I feel that if they keep this up, one day they might outlaw people putting chairs up in front of the rented umbrellas and chairs.
