We watched a boat running in a strange pattern off Garden City beach today. It looked like a commercial boat say 30 foot with twin outboards. It was silver-ish and had a single pilot house. No flying bridge, no outriggers, no trolling net, no lines in the water, only 1 person on board....

What was storage were its precise pattern that she would make. She would be about 500-750 feet off shore traveling exactly parallel to the beach for about a 1/4 mile then make a 90 degree turn onto shore and come right into the breakers before turning 180 degrees back away from shore. Then turn 90 degrees and head north about 1/4 mile then head into shore again. Looked like a grid search pattern.

We guessed they were mapping the bottom or searching for something.

Anyone have any idea what they were doing?

Thanks!

Well yesterday evening we see this guy in a Gator riding on the beach stopping exactly at the point where the boat was coming toward shore. He would get off the Gator and walk toward the water with what looked like a GPS on top of a long stick. He stopped every ten yards or so....

I chatted with him and he explained that they are measuring the slope on the shoreline. The boat came in at high tide then at low tide the Gator guy could walk into the water and overlap the boat's measurements. He went on to say that they go as far up to the street to make the measurements.

This is a yearly activity.... Interesting!

Interesting.... A similar, maybe even the same, boat was used for beach replenishment surveys in NJ. I guess they got into the breakers and capsized.
