Oh it is going to get ugly, the MB mayor is going to lose it, Atlantic Beach had a town council meeting today and has decided to extend the festival to include the weekend before Memorial Day, so they are going to issue vendor permits for up to 10 days.

The rational for doing this, is that under (new) DHEC rules, they do not inspect food vendors for less than 3 day permits, (I am not aware of this and can not confirm as yet) so might as well push the rally for the whole 2 weekends.

Please do not bother searching for a change of dates on web sites, this is just in news, most of the
news sources have not even broke this yet.

This event has been going on since my daughter was born, so 32 years ago, I was at the 1st one, there were a couple of hundred people and it has always been held on the Holiday weekend, it was always a great time and event until 1998 I think it was, when the internet gained in popularity and word spread, but not a good word and that year was totally out of control here.

Just had a call, the meetings and yelling have started.

I figure, most of the people already have their time off request in and reservations made so it should not have that great of an effect on the crowd/s.

I still have my money on Atlantic Beach doing this last minute to cause a ruckus, which it has that quickly and that next year it will be back to the weekend as they will have made their point and
received something for their efforts.

Here's the story from WMBF:

ATLANTIC BEACH, SC (WMBF) A vote during a morning council meeting in Atlantic Beach decided to extend their bike rally festivities by a whole week.

Councilmember Windy Price tells WMBF News that during the town council meeting Tuesday morning, the council voted affirmatively to extend bike fest by seven days.

Originally, the dates of the event were set for May 25 through May 28. Bike Fest this year is now scheduled for May 18 through May 28.

Price said the extension was proposed by Mayor Retha Pierce, and the town if moving forward and trying to grow.

Price added the DHEC does not perform inspections for festivals less than four days, and this change in dates will now involve DHEC in the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest.

The Harley Davidson Spring Bike Rally begins on May 14, and continues to May 20.

During the same meeting, council voted three to one to hire Calvin Blanton, the town's former finance manager, as part-time Interim Town Manager, a position which is currently part time because of the town's finances.

The 1998 time frame is also when a massive influx of people who were not bikers used the Black Bike Week/Atlantic Beach Bike Fest as their replacement event after having the very problematic Freaknik event driven out of Atlanta.

Ever since that time, the large number and ratio of participants during the Black Bike Week/Atlantic Beach Bike Fest have not been bikers nor affiliated with motorcycles in any - and the event became more of a massive unorganized lawless public street party with a much greater impact on the City of Myrtle Beach than on Atlantic Beach.
