We had a brunch meet-up today at Fusco's, and for those of you who have been waiting for this post, I apologize for being late. It has been a very busy day for me!

Everyone seemed to enjoy our first-time brunch! Thanks, Ric, for setting it up. It was wonderful to see this group of "old timers" one again, and I know that anyone seeing us together would have thought that we've been friends for for many years.

Ron and Mary (Myrtlebeachbum) were taking a long weekend of personal vacation without their children. I always appreciate it when people give up their vacation time to come to the meet-ups, and that's especially true when vacation time is limited, as it is for Ron and Mary. You may or may not know that I've been trying to adopt their daughter Brittany since I met her. I've offered her all sorts of incentives for living at the beach with us. She keeps turning me down, but today she sent me a bear and a personalized card, so I have to assume she's keeping her options open. Be good to her, Mary and Ron. She has my phone number!

It was great seeing our Canadian contingent: Julie, her parents, Andrew and Catriona. I could not get over how Catriona has grown in the year since we met them at Flo's! Thanks so much for coming to this meet-up. I hope the weather will clear up for you tomorrow and you can start enjoying Myrtle Beach a little bit more.

Ric and Pat! You just gotta love these two. They are always fun to be around, and so easy to talk to. Spend 5 minutes with them and you'll think you've known them all your life. They "presented" Wally and I with bright gold "Toledo" T-shirts, which I promise we'll wear on our next beach walk together. We're already wondering what comments we'll get!

Coleen and Brian were able to be at this meet-up. It always makes me feel happy inside when I see this couple. I remember when Coleen joined the board, and how she jumped right in and started answering questions. She seemed to bond with many of our members in a very short time, due to her genuine love for Myrtle Beach and her desire to help people.

Katie and Brett arrived with Noelle and Kylie (the perfect little girls.) Katie, I am so proud of you for sticking with your diet. I have watched your progress from the beginning, and today you looked absolutely beautiful. I loved watching Kylie as she learns to walk, and I wish all our message board members could have seen Noelle and Catriona playing hide and seek at Fusco's. Brett is the ever-patient father who seems to love his job as husband and father. Thanks to you both for being at so many of our message board meet-ups. I know it isn't easy, and I appreciate all you do.

Charlotte, I was afraid you would not be able to be at the meet-up today, so it was a real pleasure to see you walk in the room with Leo. Leo, thanks for all you do for the board, including photography. Not only does this guy have an unsurpassed talent with the written word, he is an extremely good photographer as we have all noticed. Thanks for your dedication and loyalty to our message board.

I only took a few pictures, and they did not come out well. However, several others who were present at this meet-up will be posting their pictures as time allows. Thanks again to all of you who helped to make this another successful meet-up for our MB MB group.

So I'm standing there in the middle of Fusco's Restaurant at the Beach Colony Resort shortly after 11:00 AM today and I look out over the ocean and this huge alien spacecraft bolts out of the sky and comes to a halt, hovering over the beach just beyond the outdoor pool. The hatch opens and out hop all of the smiling and waving message board members scheduled to participate in today's brunch meet-up, fresh off the intergalactic taxi from "The Planet Where We're All Freakishly Nice".

Hey, that's the only explanation *I* have for this phenomenon. On the way home a few hours later I was trying to count up how many meet-ups I'd been to and I'm sure I forgot some (there are at least 8 or more) and I have yet to meet someone I wouldn't invite to come to work with me so I can say to my colleagues, "See this person? Why can't you all be like him/her? Now give me a raise."

Seriously, the meet-up parade marches on and it's the same party over and over again with only the date and location changing. In nearly every case there are new members there for the first time, and in every case there are members who are attending their third, fourth or fifth meet-up. Whatever the ratio, it's always a room full of the friendliest, most courteous and sweetest folks you'll meet anywhere. In the solar system.

Let me just comment on the few photos I took and describe some of my favorite aliens.

Here's Wally, commander and pilot of the Nice Person UFO. Ric and Pat decided that Wally's wardrobe was lacking and felt he'd sell more of those $1,750,000 Wither's Preserve condos if he wore the home jersey of the Toledo Rockets. Or Mud Hens. Or Blades. I'm not exactly sure which team it was. Frankly, there are only, what, about 8 people in all of Toledo? Yet they have about 17 sports franchises in town. You gotta wonder how they get away with that while Xenia has none. There should be a congressional investigation.

Here's Lord Princess Patrish, clutching her little bear from Brittany, Mary and Ron's daughter. She wouldn't let go of it during the entire meal. Our waiter tried to clear her plate and accidently pulled the bear off Patrish's lap. A fight ensued and when the dust cleared, there was Patrish proudly latched on to Brittany Bear, while our waiter lay unconscious on the floor in a position the human body was never meant to assume.

Here's Brian and Colleen. You can always tell when you're in the presence of people who REALLY know etiquette when they drink coffee with a pinkie extended. Check out Mrs. Hinger. I've actually seen Colleen come off the field of a women's Rugby match, knees scraped, shirt torn, and chug down an entire 16 ounce Gatorade -- with pinkie extended. She's nothing if not proper.

Here's Mary and Ron. No one seemed to know this today, but Ron and Mary are celebrating 20 years of wedded bliss this weekend. Don't they look happy? Six letters explain this. "NO KIDS". They're chained to their grandparents' couch up in Allentown. I'm only partially kidding. You couldn't wipe the grin off Ron's and Mary's face. I pointed to the ocean at one point and said to Ron, "Look! Tsunami!"

Ron: "Yeah. So?"

That's contentment.

Here are Catriona, Andrew, and Julie from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Northern Hemisphere, Earth. They insisted I write it all out. "Don't just say Toronto. We want the whole thing in there." This was my first time meeting the clan of "TorontoJulie" and, of course, what can I say? Liquified niceness.

Andrew is about as comfortable a person to be around as anyone I've met. I knew the guy for 30 seconds and we already had a tee time for next weekend. Catriona, which sounds suspiciously like "Katrina" when it's pronounced (this is the same country that spells the word "color", C-O-L-O-U-R, so, hey, we'll let it slide), was a living doll. And Julie, well, look at her. Stunning isn't too strong a word, right? I was afraid to talk to her, frankly. As a geeky boy in elementary school, I learned a long time ago that women with movie-star looks are WAY OFF LIMITS. "You're not allowed to talk directly to them. Understand?" I never unlearned it. Even now I have to talk to Charlotte through an interpreter.

Seriously, Julie is a complete sweetheart. She even spoke Canadian to me for a short time. I can't get enough of that. You know. "About" becomes "A-BOAT". And "The ride in through the Trans-Neptunian asteroid belt was rough", becomes "The ride in through the Trans-Neptunian asteroid belt was rough, EH?" Too cute.

Here's newly minted 28 year-old (last week) Brett, newly-minted one-year-old (yesterday) Kylie, and newly minted 20th anniversary (this weekend) Mary, all in the same picture! I know. Ripley's material. Brett's only reason for coming was to show off his new Teddy Ginn Ohio State football jersey to Ric, a die-hard Michigan Wolverines fan. They were both asked to leave their respective weapons in the coat room before joining us, and one of the adults was assigned to each of them at all times to prevent a melee from erupting.

Here's Katie and Julie. I was actually just to the left of Katie in this picture. Katie was talking to Julie FOR me because, well, you know the rules.

I saved the best for last. Here are Pat and Ric. I've known these two since I joined the message board WAY back in '05 but this was the first time we've actually met in person. We talk often on the forum about the core group of message board members who are here through thick and thin and who keep things going even during the months when very little is happening. Well, that's Ric and Pat. The are the picture of midwest charm and warmth. I loved them before I met them and I loved them more after. Ric was insulting me before I even walked through the door, which to women is completely confusing and irrational, but to guys is a sign of affection and respect. Pat was so sweet and kind. They're both cut from the same cloth as all the other midwesterners from that general area of Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. You just want to invite them home with you and have them move right in. And while they're at it, could they please make you a chicken salad sandwich and throw in a load of whites?

It was two hours of a wonderful time with great friends, new and old. I had to hold back tears at the end when they all re-boarded the mothership and the proton engines fired them all back to Planet Freak. They'll be back, though, and when they return, you should make every effort to attend. It's an experience about which you'll reminisce for a long time.

Or as Julie and Andrew would say, "It's an experience aboat which you'll reminisce for a long time. Eh?"

After what Patrish and Leo said about these meet-ups there isn't anything left to say. It was just like all the other meet-ups we've been to. It's like you've known these friends all your life! After the meet-up Mary and I were sad that is was over, because there was nothing else to look forward to except going Home. We did see Julie and Andrew back at the pool at Long Bay Resort before we went Home. We talked to Julie and her Dad who were in the hot tub, and Andrew as he floated by in the lazy river, trying to catch-up to Catriona.

Here's the link to the Fusco's meet-up photos!

I meant to respond to this earlier, but it's been a little crazy around my house.

We had such a great time at the meet-up. I really wish I could have spent the entire day chatting. Unfortunately, my girls were hanging on by a thread and desperately in need of a nap. Had we stayed a moment longer, there may have been an unpleasant display of screaming flailing children (and my reputation for having well behaved kids would have been compromised).

One of these days, I'm going to go to a meetup without the girls, and when that happens, I will probably talk everybody's ear off and have to be "escorted" out the door when it's over, because I won't want to leave.

Thank you Ric and Pat for setting this up. I really enjoyed meeting both of you. You are a wonderful couple, and I hope your dreams of moving down here come true real soon!

We made it home yesterday!

I just wanted to say that one of the high points of our trip was the meet up. It was fantastic meeting up with everybody and seeing some new faces!

First of all, Catriona (Leo is correct it is pronounced Katrina - we went with the Gaelic spelling in light of Andrew's Scottish heritage) had a great time! Not only did she score some great gifts - but she got to play with Noelle and Kylie. Thanks for the colouring book Patrish - it came in handy on the long drive home. I also have to thank Ron and Mary for the Teddy Bear - which Catriona adores. I was trying to convince her to name it Myrtle, but she decided that the bear's name is "Kitty" and that's that.

It was great seing Ric, Pat, Patrish and Wally again. I also really enjoyed meeting Katie and her crew (the girls are cute as dolls), Colleen and Brian, Leo and Charlotte, and Ron and Mary (I hope the kids were good for the grandparents!)

I guess that's ABOOT it, eh? Now I have to start on that trip report...

 Julie

I have been desperately trying to log onto the internet since the day we arrived. Two weeks later, I finally made it! :nanner: I wanted to report on the Fusco's meet-up before Leo could, but was foiled by the lack of a connection. :BandHead: As everyone has stated before, if you have a chance to make it to a meet-up, by all means do so. You are doing yourself a great disservice by not including yourself into this extended family. For anyone who has not had the pleasure of meeting Leo & Charlotte, Wally & Patrish, or any member of this message board for that matter, I offer my deepest sympathy. Our members are all the kindest, warmest people it has ever been my priviledge to meet, and to now proudly call my friends. As Myrtlebeachbum Ron so eloquently stated at Flamingo"s "It don't get no gooder than this"!

When Pat and I finally get home (sometime Sunday evening) I will enter my trip report.

I just wanted to add that it was ANOTHER great meet-up! Brian and I had a wonderful time. The brunch was good but the company was better. What a joy to spend time with such a special group of people (I just wish the time wouldn't go so quickly!) I think what "wows" me is exactly what Leo indicates time and time again:
Quote:
...it's always a room full of the friendliest, most courteous and sweetest folks you'll meet anywhere.

That's not sweet talk...that's the honest to goodness truth. Where are all the grumpy, miserable people hiding? :angry5: Perhaps vacationing in Florida...they certainly don't seem to be part of the MB2!

For any of you who haven't had a chance to attend a meet-up yet, I would whole-heartedly encourage you to do so if/when the opportunity arises. You won't regret it. Chances are good you'll walk away wishing there was even more time to get to know the unique personalities that make this message board what it is. We are extremely fortunate to have such a great group of people to spend time with, not only on the board but also in person. Don't miss out on the chance to discover that for yourself!
Colleen
