Normally I'd write out what we did every day of our trip, but most of our days were spent doing the same thing (cleaning, going to the beach, going out to eat, etc) so I thought I'd write an overall report. We went to MB in two separate trips:

10/12-10/22
My parents and I left our house around 8am. We stopped at McDonald's for a quick breakfast. The traffic wasn't too bad. About 2 hours into our trip we stopped for gas and a leg stretch. We had a late lunch at Village Subs located inside the Village Store in Wallace, NC. We all ordered toasted half tuna subs with fixins. They were great. There are no pictures due to us being hungry and scarfing our subs down! We stopped again about 3 hours later for a bathroom break and gas. After that, it was straight to Myrtle Beach - no stops!

We made it to our condo safe and sound. I've mentioned this in previous trip reports, but my parents own a condo in the Carolina Winds building and that's where we've stayed for the past couple of years. We were initially going to arrive on Tuesday, but Carolina Winds was closed due to Hurricane Matthew. Thankfully there wasn't any major damage done to our area - just lots of debris clean up. Carolina Winds didn't officially open until Thursday since power was out in the main building, but we decided to go down on Wednesday because our building (located in the villas) had power AND internet (yay!) :nanner:

Overall, our trip was pretty good. We bought new beach chairs at Walmart. The old ones were so worn that our butts would sink straight to the sand once we sat down. :hysterical: Later on in the week, we took a drive down to the Waccamaw Furniture & Linen Outlet. Man, what a ghost town that area is! I remember when Waccamaw was the place to be. I remember my dad having to drop my mom and I off at one of the entrances so he could find a place far away to park. I have fond memories of that mall from when I was a kid and it's such a stark contrast to what's there now. We also went to Publix for the first time. We don't have a Publix near us, so I wanted to see what the store was like. I ordered an Italian Sub at their sub station with lettuce, tomato, mayo, spicy mustard, and pickles on 5-grain bread for lunch. The sub was great. I would get a sub from them again. Several days were spent cleaning up the condo and replacing and repairing broken or missing items. Once all the cleaning was done, we managed to go to the beach a couple of days in a row. The weather was perfect :sunny: and we pretty much had the beach to ourselves early in the morning. We got to eat at some of our favorite restaurants and try a new mini golf course.

I'll post reviews and photos of the places we went to and ate at during our stay!

11/29 - 12/1
These past couple of days were a headache! :BandHead: My parents were told the closing would be on the 30th and they made an appointment to sign the papers. They requested an earlier date so my dad wouldn't have to take off work, but that didn't happen. My dad took off work and we drove down on a Tuesday. We planned to arrive in MB on Tuesday, sign papers on Wednesday, and leave Thursday morning. On Tuesday afternoon, we learned there was a hold up with the loan company and that they weren't "clear to close," and it could be as late as Friday. :ohnoes: To say my parents were angry was an understatement! The buyers were angry as well. The lawyers on each side pushed very hard to get it to close before Friday. Eventually the lender got their act together and the papers were signed Thursday morning before we left. My parents were happy the condo sold, but sad at the same time. They owned the condo for over 20 years. We've had many great memories staying there over the past couple of years. My parents also became great friends with the husband and wife who lived next door. They were always there to check in on our place and make sure everything was okay. We'll come back to Myrtle Beach, of course, but now we're not sure where we'll stay! We used to stay at Sea Winds when I was kid but the condo we always rented was taken off the rental program. We might just find another condo in the Carolina Winds building since we're used to staying there now. Who knows!?

It was still open when we moved here in 1997. Even the trolleys were still going from building to building. But it wasn’t long until construction started at the Tanger 501 Outlet. I remember talking with people who worked in the various stores, and most said they wanted to move. The demise of Waccamaw was followed by Hard Rock Cafe and Freestyle Music Park, neither of which lasted more than year. Both the music parks thought they were going to be the next-best-thing…but they weren’t.

The closing sounds like a nightmare. I’m sorry your parents had to experience that. I know you have many, many wonderful memories of the time you spent you spent there, and that is so special!

Hopefully you will find a vacation rental here that will suit your needs.

Thanks so much for taking the time yo write your reviews! You always come through with the best restaurant reviews! :beerchug:

There should be no reason to have to come in person for a closing. We just sold my mom's place in MB and we did it all via PDF and then Fed Ex'd the originals back to the attorneys. This happens all the time now.

I do agree! That's how my parents would have handled the signing, however we took the trip down because we needed to clean out the owners closet and take all of those items home. We couldn't clean it out the previous month we were there in case the deal fell through and then we'd have to lug everything back the next time we went up.

I'm sure we will! We joked about the new owners putting it on a rental program and renting it from them!

I hated the Waccamaw trip when I was young. I always knew it was coming and dreaded the day that mom would decide to ask to go. It was the place to shop back in the day. It is a ghost town now.
