Sorry I have not checked in this week. Sunday evening our internet started running so slow it took forever to just get the computer to load the net. I think I have taken lots of pics to share (especially food). I will work on those just as soon as I get a few minutes. We had a wonderful busy week. So sad to be home today.

Patrish, sorry I didn't get get a chance to call. I literally didn't know which way I was going from one hour to the next. Who knows we may be back in September  . Those are always more laid back trips with more free time.

Kind of sums up our trip this year. I think I'm such a veteran of MB now that I just get overwhelmed when I'm down there  . There are so many great things to do in MB that there is no way you can get them all in. We actually didn't even drive down the main drag this year. The closest we even came to it was eating at Carolina Roadhouse and we took Robert Grissom almost all the way to it. Only went to Broadway for 45 minutes the day we got there, and just long enough to take a picture right before we left. I don't know what happened this year. Think someone hit the fast forward button.

Ok, here we go with the trip report. Sorry for the delay, it is the pits coming back to the real world. I have kinda had the beach blues  . Again this year we had a wonderful family vacation. I didn't realize how much I was in need of a vacation until I arrived and let the ocean take my cares away. Some of you may think that is kinda silly, but it really did. I just sat back and let the ocean do it's thing.

Friday, July 5th

It is 3:30 A.M. and the phone rings. You know when your phone rings at 3:30 A.M. that it is not good. It was my little 89 year old grandmother who has bronchial asthma. Every so often she has a spell and must go to the Dr. for a shot and some meds. It was the day after the 4th so she knew her primary care Dr. would not be in so she felt like we should take a trip to the er before everyone left for vacation. So off I go to the er. Fortunatly she knows what she needs and the er DR. was willing to listen. We were in and out only 45 minutes past when we were planning to leave for vacation. I truly hated leaving her, but she insisted and was left in good hands.

After dropping this precious family member off Image

we were on the road. Of course it was raining cats and dogs when we pulled out, but I could have cared less. It was a rough drive to Columbia in the rain, but we made it safe and sound. Again we stayed at the Holdiay Express on Harbison Blvd at the Columbian Mall. ($79.99). I have always got great rates at this hotel if I book early. I think I called in January this year. It is clean, comfortable and the breakfast is not that bad. We arrived early in the day so I took off and got what has become my annual Myrtle Beach pedicure. I don't treat myself to these little luxuries often. It was wonderful and relaxing and my little piggies were ready to hit the beach. A girl has to have cute piggies at the beach right? After dinner at Outback we turned in early so we could be rested and fresh for our first day at the beach. Did I mention it was still pouring rain when we turned in for the night. Urggg....

What a great start, Deanna...a girl definitely needs cute piggies at the beach...how nice too that your Grandma knows she can count on you! I can not wait to read more...Rain never dampens our spirits...just slows us down some...

Yippee....I get to see the ocean today! Honestly this is one of the most exciting days of the year. We got up extra early and was on the road by 7:15. All of us girls wanted to shop Tanger 501 on the way into the beach instead of driving back over after we unpacked at the condo. What great guys we have being so understanding of this shopping adventure. QVC was having a 60% off sale for the entire store. QVC is one of those stores that you never know if you will find anything or not. Some of their merchandise is alot of junk, but you can find some good buys from time to time. I purchased a Dooney and Bourke purse and was happy as a peach! A great way to start the vacay. We were kinda concerned traffic wise about going in on 501 instead of hitting Hwy 22 to North Myrtle, but it worked out ok. We left Tanger and hit 31 so we missed most of the traffic. After about an hour of shopping we headed over to Broadway At The Beach for our annual lunch at Margaritaville. When we pulled into Broadway the sun finally popped through the clouds. Praise The Lord! Vacation Was On!

After lunch we traveled over to Windy Hill Dunes in North Myrtle Beach. This will be our 4th year staying in unit 1206. We really do love it here. It is not overly crowded, parking is great and it is close to all the things we need. We have gotten to know the owners Mike & Robin Roop and they are wonderful to work with. Here is a link on VRBO of our condo

Ok folks this right here is what it is all about. My first glimpse of the ocean...Ahhhh

We took our time unpacking and then did the grocery chore. We went to Wal-Mart in North Myrtle (not the one on Kings Rd by Tanger) and it was a breeze. We were in and out in no time. Don't get me wrong it was busy, but not the two hour adventure that we have had in the past. They actually had employees directing traffic and moving things along and I think it helped alot. I give Wal-Mart two thumbs up on this one.

Later on that evening we just chilled. I know...totally not like us at all. I am truly aging and slowing down. We took a sunset walk on the beach and then ordered Ultimate California Pizza which was delivered at 10 P.M. I hadn't eat that late in ages. The pizza was great and we pigged out. My favorite this year was the Mexican Pizza and the BBQ Pizza. Yummo! Sorry, I must have been too tired to pull out the camera.

My brother arrived around midnight and after chatting with him for a while we all hit the hay. I have said it before and will say it again the first day at the beach is always the best.

Leanna and I were up bright and early for our 4 mile power walk. It was a beautiful day and there was just something about these walks and all the beauty of the ocean that just took my stress away. I keep telling Doug I would be so much easier to live with if he would just buy a condo at the beach. Wishful thinking. After my breakfast of unhealthy champions WAFFLES....we hit the beach. Oh glorious day. The weather was just fabulous. Mr. Sun was shining bright and it was not too hot. Just perfect for a day of BEACHING IT! All of us girls were kicked back in our chairs and the guys were knocking around some golf balls. Everyone just as happy as can be. I kept hearing reports from home and Tennessee was just getting hammered with flooding rains. Thank goodness it was not raining on my little piece of paradise.

After our fun in the sun we came in and cleaned up for our first night out on the town. I was not surprise that we were headed to Carolina Roadhouse

After our delish meal we decided to head back north to Barefoot Landing. Perfect night for walking around Barefoot. I first went to the Mole Hole to check out the Kamelon pops. I had every intention of buying one on this trip and I just kept putting it off thinking the perfect one would show up. The week got away and no pop for me.
What on earth was I thinking. I dropped the ball on that one.

I took a couple of pics while walking around.

As we were walking towards the General Store I kept smelling cows. I thought what in the world is that? It just kept getting stronger and stronger...and it was nasty I might add. My cousin kept telling me it was Alligator Adventure. Since I had been there I knew it didn't smell that way. When I walked into the General Store I looked over and saw this
Image

Perfect opportunity for all you camel lovers out there to take a ride. I passed on that opportunity. However, I did watch a few of the kids take a ride and they seemed to really enjoy the experience. I mean it is not everyday you seem a camel.

My cousin had seen a sign that said the winery had wine slushies. I am not a drinker (except for an occasional margarita), but I went along on her little journey to the winery. By golly they were pretty good. They have about six different flavors and I think they will give you a sample of two. The sample was enough for me. I can smell alcohol and start walking sideways. For all you wine lovers you might want to give this a try.

Back to the room to watch the Barefoot fireworks from the condo and then the entire family took a night beach stroll. I love the beach at night.

Sorry some of my pics are not clear. I think I have figured out why and will do better on my next installment.

Monday morning is our annual girls breakfast at the Sea Captains House. We all love this little girls trip. I didn't take any pics of the buffet (wish I had), but take my word for it it is worth the $$$. Here is a pic that I took last year of my plate. I didn't eat it all, but I probably could have. I love the French toast and corn beef hash.

Here are a few pics that we took after our breakfast. Great place for picture taking.

After breakfast it was off to the beach. Another beautiful beach day. This is the day that I searched for sharks teeth most of the day. I walked and sifted for I know at least two hours. Guys, it is just not meant to be.

For dinner it was Chucks Steak House. Doug and I had eaten there last fall and it was good so we gave it another shot.

Chucks Steakhouse Review viewtopic.php?f=53&t=14484

My brother had went deep sea fishing that morning and was told by the captain that we would get the best fresh seafood at a place called Crab Catchers in Little River. Of course I had heard of this place from the board and if my mind served me correctly both good and bad reviews. We decided to drive up to Little River and just check it our as a potential place to eat. We got there and I took one look at the place and said my mother would not be caught dead in there. Doug and my brother insisted these were the best kind of places to eat. Yeah Right! So I got out of the car to check out the menu they had outside. While I was reading the menu a well dressed gentleman stopped me and asked if I was thinking about eating there. He very quickly told me that he was a local and that Crab Catchers was some of the best fresh seafood we would find. Well ok guess we will be eating at Crab Catchers sometime during the week. Can't lie that I was a bit nervous about that.

We drove back to the condo after our Little River adventure to a 4 mile walk on the beach and a family night of games. Good Times!

Loving your trip report, Deanna, and the photos, too!

So Wally is looking over my shoulder and we saw the camel at BFL. I said "I rode a camel in 2005 when Judy and I were in Istanbul, and it DID smell bad!" And Wally said "The Camel named Clyde?" I said "Huh?" He said "Ahab the Arab!"
Me: ???
So we had to go on over to YouTube and listen to the "Camel Named Clyde!" LOL!

OK....back on topic. That's a great shot on the swing of all the girls! And you can't go wrong with Sea Captain's House! Looks delicious!

Thanks for taking the time to post your trip report, and of course the photos!

Can't wait to hear your review of Crab Catcher's. Ate there twice. First visit great. Second time was so-so. Ruann is extremely picky eater and Crab Catcher's is one of only two places she will order fish.

First time we were seated along north wall by window. Our view was casino boat and some small fishing boats returning to dock. While we ate our entertainment was watching the fishing boats cleaning up. Guts, heads, blood and bait all over the dock being sprayed away with a hose. We laughed it off. Food was good.

If you ever make it down in May. That whole area back along the waterfront and 3-4 blocks out towards 17 is blocked off to vehicle traffic for Blue Crab Festival. Lots of fun. Good music.

Another beautiful day at the beach. This was our third full day and the weather had been absolutely perfect. Honestly there had not been a dark cloud in the sky. The girls spent the day on the beach again and the guys joined us after golf. This year one of my very best friends that used to vacation with us every year was part of our crew. She and I had the best time catching up. We sat on the beach and talked for hours. There were even a few evenings that she and I sat on the beach until after 10:00 P.M. talking. Funny how goods friends can just pick up after time has separated them. Our kids grew up together and it was so odd to see them together as grown ups. Her grandkids were also there and that really made me realize that the cycle of life comes way too soon. Those were special days.

We spent a long day at the beach because my niece and sister in law flew in from Michigan and didn't get to the sand until about 1:30. The late beach day made us head out for dinner alot later than we normally go. My brother decided that we needed to give Crab Catchers a try. Oh my!

After our meal at Crab Catchers some of us girls wanted to take a trip to Callahan's in Calabash since we were right there at it's door. Now all of our guys hate this trip. They would do just about anything to avoid it. We had to promise we wouldn't be long. Boy, did they fall for that one! I had been looking for some wooden wind chimes and found a beautiful set and since we didn't make it to Callahan's last year the key lime cheesecake fudge was a must. It is so good! We were pretty nice to our guys and didn't spend hours on end at Callahan's. After shopping we headed back to the condo. We were all pretty tired so we decided to turn in early. If you call 11:00 P.M. early.

Leanna and I were on our walk this morning and some of you may know of the swash down by Beach Cove where the ocean water runs in the marsh. Well we decided we were going to try and cross it so we could walk on the residential side and look at the houses that we dream of living in. Well this was not a good idea... there are rocks down there in that water. We made it to the other side but as we were climbing out we both cut our feet on the rocks. I know it was stupid, but we did end up continuing with our walk and enjoyed looking at the beautiful homes and lots of shells. However, we both had to doctor our feet for several days. They were pretty deep cuts. Also, in that area were lots of sand crabs and their big holes that they live in. I remember seeing these are a child in Windy Hill. I have often wondered if all the tourist have driven them away. I think this confirms my theory. I also believe this to be true about dolphins. We haven't seen a dolphin in about 5 years.

It was another beautiful beach day. How on earth did we get so lucky? It had not rained one drop of rain all week. This is the day that we packed a huge picnic lunch and took to the beach. I made chicken and egg salad and put it on sweet Hawaiian rolls. I also made a huge fruit salad. It was yummy for a beach picnic. We had a big beach circle of chairs and just laughed and talked the day away.

After the beach some of our crew wanted to eat Japanese at Yamato. That would have not been my pick of places to go, but sometimes you just have to go with the flow. I didn't take any food pics because once you have eaten Japanese you have eaten Japanese. The food and service were good, but it was terribly hot in the restaurant. Doug had sweat running down his back and forehead. He was miserable. He told me he would never go there again. Guess my guy doesn't like to be hot.

After dinner we walked around Broadway for a little while and then headed back for family games. We seemed to have been in early just about every night. Another sign that we are not young anymore.

Can you believe it...another beautiful beach day. Could it be that everyday could turn out that way? We headed out extra early this morning and didn't come back in until after 2:00 P.M. I have most certainly turned into a beach bum.

Today was family picture day! Oh the joy of family picture day. It is like pulling teeth. The girls love it and the guys hate it. We literally have had some of our worst family disputes over these pictures. We spent extra time getting all dolled up so we could be glamorous. We had decided that we would go out to dinner and when the sun started to go down we would hit the beach for some pics. As we were all going down the elevator my mom looks outside and says "looks like the wind is blowing really strong out there". I didn't pay much attention until we walked outside. Oh my gosh it was like we stepped into a hurricane. We all just stood around looking at each others hair flying in a million different directions. So much for pretty hair on picture day. Of course the guys thought it was funny.

Since we had never been to Land Shark that we where we headed for dinner. Land Shark Review viewtopic.php?f=55&t=14486

After we ate my niece Saeri and I rode the SkyWheel
Image

After our ride we headed down to 2nd Ave Pier. I noticed a new putt putt course right on the beach side of Ocean Blvd. Sorry I didn't catch the name as we drove by. I know it wasn't there back in September because that was my walking route. I remembered them tearing down an old hotel and that is where the new putt putt is. Glad to see they are still cleaning up and expanding that area. They desperately need to keep moving south towards Family Kingdom. There are some rough places through there.
Image

We planned to take our pics at 2nd Ave Pier, but when we stepped out of the car the wind was still blowing terrible. We tried to take a few pics, but honestly I couldn't keep my hair from blowing across my face. It was useless. We headed up to the pier for an hour or so, but nothing exciting happened while we were there. Here are a few pics we took on the pier.

It was Thursday night and we had not been to Krispy Kreme. So it had to be done.

All I can say is oh my they were wonderful. I should have taken a pic of us all in the car wolfing them down. It was a sight to behold. I don't know if you noticed in our Krispy Kreme pic, but the wind is no longer blowing. Does that just not figure!

On the way back to North Myrtle we had the best time in the car. Leanna loves to sing in the car and it is a wonder we did not get pulled over for a DUI. We were singing at the top of our lungs. Those kind of memories are some of the best.
