Another spur of the moment trip…. Jan and I were on a road-trip to my mother’s house in Richmond 2 weekends ago, when both Jan and I said, “why don’t we keep going to Myrtle Beach?” With Kelly being a church camp counselor for the week, we had Mon thru Sat to ourselves…. So why not ? Still had to visit Mom for the weekend, then headed back to Maryland to get Kelly ready. After calls to our bosses and the Caribbean…. We were off !

Monday: very minimal Monday traffic on I-95 which was completely unexpected. Left in cloudy/windy/rain, but as we headed through NC the sun came out and we felt the “Warm wave of Myrtle-ness” hit us like Christmas morning fun…. The trip is a terrific decision! Very quick check-in (another benefit of arriving on a Monday….), a quick unpack and shower, but where to eat ? After an 8 hr drive I needed somewhere casual, while Jan wanted upscale… we are so much alike it is scary !?! Since I was the driver and she the designated-napper, I won…. Tough decisions, either Mr Fish or Biminis. Mr Fish is nearby, but Biminis ruled because the vision of an oyster shooter popped into my head….. Biminis Review

Stopped afterward at Bi-Lo for water, sodas, snacks etc , then chilled on the balcony enjoying the warm winds of Myrtle-ness blowing down the beach…..

Tuesday: In the rush to pack Sunday evening, I forgot the beach umbrella… argh ! Made coffee and off in search of the best umbrella at the lowest price. First stop was Sam’s Club and hit paydirt. Great umbrella for 30 dollars….. oh wait.. I also forgot beach towels… and here is some nice wine at bargain prices… and this Myrtle Beach Sam’s stocks a carpet cleaner that ours in Maryland no longer carries…. How come I can never get out of Sam’s for less than a hundred bucks ?!?

Finally made it to the beach… incredibly relaxing, even with the heat. Except for a quick break for lunch at the Sea Captains, Sea Captains Review, then back out until ~4:30, and back up to the room to chill down and get ready for dinner. I was enjoying my biggest complaints of the Caribbean: lousy wifi and cell reception… nothing like being unplugged !

Jan got to pick Carolina roadhouse for dinner (sorry we forgot about the meetup !). As the wait at Roadhouse during high-season can be substantial, we stopped at Dirty Don’s on 21st Ave for apps of blackened oysters. Place was a zoo…. Slow service (they were also short-handed) and the manager was a punk…. Asked if he knew who was serving outside, he said “Yes, I know all of them”…. Then walked away. Gee pal, maybe you should go work at Comedy Cabana since customer service is alien to you. Oysters were delicious, but were missing the usual excess oil/seasoning to dredge the bread in… they are usually loaded.

Paid up and headed down to Roadhouse, Carolina Roadhouse Review. Then back to the room where I promptly fell asleep….. ah, the joys of a good desert !

Wednesday: Fresh coffee, plugged in the laptop and started this trip report on the balcony with the waves crashing in front of me… unfortunately the wifi signal was very weak, so no Live Trip Report… The forecast for the next few days is a bit iffy due to a cold front approaching, so today is definitely another beach day while we can. I am packing up the new umbrella, loading the cooler and heading out….
Had great beach time until ~1:30pm, and off to Mr Fish for lunch ! Mr Fish Review

After beach time, we chilled in the room with our own little Happy Hour featuring my soon-to-be-patented rum-punch, and deciding to go somewhere close for dinner… but where ? Jan suggested Italian and I recalled seeing Ciaos up the road, so we headed on up Rte 17. Didn’t find Ciaos, but instead ran into this new place called Tuscanos…. Seemed unassuming from the outside and a group of young people were leaving… from outside, I was less-than enthused and prepared for a "meatball sub" type of place. Jan asked the kids for recommendations as they were getting in their cars and they all said in unison “LASAGNA” !!! Nice little place…. Tuscano review

Thursday: A little hot, but no threat of long-term downpours, so we decided on exploring Northward…. Drove through North Myrtle, Cherry Grove and Little River to get the feel for future visits. Thank goodness for GPS’s ! Hit Rumm Runnerz for lunch in Little River, Rum Runnerz review, before continuing our journey to find Island Time near the Swing Bridge to visit it’s owner who we met at Biminis…. Unfortunately Island Time didn’t open til 4p, so we continued southbound….

Returned ~4pm to chill in the room for a bit, then off to Yamato at BATB for sushi and tempura, Yamatos Review. This was followed by a visit to Kligg’s for some 4th of July kites and windsocks, then a quick visit by me to the Tilted Kilt…. had to do the first review for my MBMB friends !!! Tilted Kilt Review. Drove back in a downpour, then watched a great lightning show from the balcony.

Friday: The stalled cold front didn’t affect us much, so another long Beach Day. Jan chatted with a woman who sat next to us every day while her husband and son golfed. Ended up she was an ex-flight attendant (so is Jan), so they were instant friends. I took turns meditating (sounds more sophisticated than “chillin”), listening to tropical rock, sipping a beer and body surfing..... rinse and repeat.

Dinner was leftovers from Carolina Roadhouse, Mr Fish (Crab Soup) and Tuscanos… awesome ! Jan did a load of laundry so we had clean clothes for the drive. I fell asleep early… sorry dear !

Saturday: Travel day home…. Leaving the warm waves of Myrtle-ness behind us…. BOO !
Still trying to worm another August trip into the calendar… probably another last-minute trip also !

Well what a little surprise for all of us that you sneaked into Myrtle Beach without us knowing. Good for you to just take up and go. Sounds wonderful to me. Loved your report! Loved "Myrtle-ness"...I may have to steal that for my report next week.

Thanks for sharing.

Last minute trips are so GREAT! I really enjoyed your trip...you did alot during your week...if you got out of Sam's for $100 you did great...usually it is $200 for us... could we know more about the "soon to be patented" rum punch?

Thanks for the report...hope you get to do another last minute trip!

Kirk, I know you are just too modest to admit that your REAL reason for sneaking a trip to the beach was because you knew we needed more trip reports. You are a good man, and you will have many treasures in heaven and stars in your crown.

Seriously...thanks for an excellent report!

Kirk, so glad you and Jan had the chance to get away for a quick trip to MB! Sometimes those spur-of-the-moment trips are more fun than the carefully planned ones! Sounds like this was one of those!

Thanks so much! Love the links to the restaurants...I keep forgetting about Bimini's, we went there once a while ago and never went back. We enjoyed it so I guess we should head over again! Thanks again for sharing :sunny:

Kirk, really enjoyed your trip report. You have a great way of putting words together. Are you and Leo really brothers and have kept it a secret from us (lol)? I am sorry to hear that you had to waste your precious vacation time going to the Tilted Kilt, just so you could report back to us. Life is tough at the beach!! All kidding aside I do really enjoy your way with words.

Loved your humorous commentary. Sam's club usually gets about $250 bucks of my money every visit (I mean have you seen the supersize bags of ravioli!) I'm disappointed that you only had 1 bloody Mary. How can I find the best when you had nothing to compare it to? Come on man, keep a tally! I guess I will need to defer to Ron. :nanner:
