I have never written a trip report, but I am always up for a challenge, so here we go.

Here are the facts of the trip.

Stayed: Summer D’ Lite Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach, on the channel

Group: Me (Matt) age 33. Wife (Amee) age 31 Mom (Sandy) age old Dad (Bill) age old Brother (Bill) age 36, and his three kids, 4, 8, and 15.

Saturday
Saturday was more of a travel day, we left around 3 am and got to the property around 3PM. I was worried about the walk from the house to the beach, due to the fact that I need both of my hips replaced, and walking can be a painful experience. I used my cane, and could easily handle the short walk. Once we got settled in, we walked to the beach, and let the kids enjoy the waves, I was shocked at how warm the water was. The waves were not that rough, but with my hips, I stayed in the shallow. Returned to the house to find that my parents were lost, my brother set out to find them. Once they found the house, we ordered pizza, from a local pizza shop, sorry I can’t remember the name. Food was not that great, all three kids said that the pizza was bad, and that says something when kids won’t eat pizza. We them ran to IGA, for beer and other goodies, and called it an early night.

Sunday

This day was dedicated to the beach. I hobbled over, and stayed as long as I could, it was so hot and humid, that I tried my best to get into deeper water. The waves knocked me down, and that caused some sever pain, but I bucked up and kept on keeping on. That night we cooked in. Sat on the deck and watched kids fish and set crab nets. Over the week, they caught some nice crabs, so we would cook them as they caught them. They were really good, but do they stink up a house. This is also the day that we noticed a big black bird that would sit on the telephone pole and dive bomb people that walked by. It actually knocked a hat off of one lady that was walking. We thought they was a nest nearby. Once the sun set, it was time to call it a day.

Monday

Got up and took my Mom and my wife down to Pawley’s Island to look for shells. This is a beautiful beach, but a sign said that swimming is dangerous due to rip tides. Walked the beach, while they shelled, and saw a path where a sea turtle had came on shore to lay eggs. A local said that it was a false nest, and that they believe a dog had chased the turtle off before the eggs could be laid. It was still something to see. On the way home we stopped by the Lazy Gator in Murrells Inlet, so they could shop. Walked outside and saw a little alligator in their pond. I wanted to see one in the wild, so this will do for now. We returned home, and I was sore from walking on the beach, so my wife went to the beach by herself. Once I rested, I headed to the beach, and was attacked by the bird. It followed me all the way to the beach, dive bombing at least three times. I told my wife this and she thought it was funny, I however was not laughing. I am a fan of animals, but I was wishing harm on this evil bird. I know it was just being territorial, but when your hips hurt, and something makes you jump, it really hurts. Another night of eating in, my mom loves to cook, even on vacation, and I love eating here home cooked meals.

Tuesday
My brother, his kids and my wife and I went to Ripley’s Aquarium. This is the third time I have been here, but they had the new mermaid exhibit and my wife and niece wanted to see it. The new shark exhibit was nice and very interesting. They had a meet and greet with a mermaid, they took a picture and then wanted you to buy it. My wife got here picture taken, and of course we had to buy it. We then waited 45 mins. For the mermaid show that lasted 10-15 mins. My niece really enjoyed it, and now wants to be a mermaid with a purple tail when she grows up. After this my wife and I went to Margaritaville. I am a huge Jimmy Buffett fan, and this was just something I had to do. Food was good, but it was more of a novelty, I am not sure if I would return. Once we left lunch, it was hot and I was hurting again, so we went back home. Once Home went to beach again, and did my best to keep cool. Another night of eating in, then sitting on the deck, enjoying a cold beer, and a nice cigar. Kids loved fishing, nephew caught a toadfish.

Wednesday
Today my nephew wanted to go to the Giant Crab, so we planned on an early dinner. We got up and went to the beach for a couple hours and then went to dinner. The Giant Crab was not bad, it is a buffet, with buffet style foods. Not the best seafood, I have ever eaten, but not the worse. Service was good, and food was hot, what more could you ask for. After dinner, my wife and I headed to the boardwalk. This area is nice, stopped by the Bowery for a couple beers, then road the Sky Wheel. It was nice, the cabs all have AC, which was a huge plus for me. I am not a fan of the heat, I will take the snow, you can always put layers on in the cold to warm up, in the heat you can only take so much off before you are arrested.

Thursday
Took my parents to Barefoot Landing to do a little shopping. Had lunch at Dick’s Last Resort, love that place, my parents enjoyed it, we all have a twisted sense of humor. Went back home to go to beach. While at the beach, my wife needed to run to the house to get sun lotion, when she returned, she was not too happy with the attack bird, it attacked her twice. I laughed, she did not.

Friday
This was the last full day so we had one thing in mind, Beach. We got up at first light and headed to the beach. Left beach for lunch and went to Duffey Street Seafood Shack. This was such a surprise, the food was so good, we both had the Pirate Platter. This will be a must go place from here on out. After that went back to beach.

Saturday

Headed Home.

I am sorry if this is too long winded, but I just wanted to give everyone a peak into my vacation. After all was said and done the bird had attacked everyone in our group except my 5 year old niece.

We took some picture, and once I figure out what I am doing, I will try and post a few. I am trying to plan a trip back in September, it would be my wife, myself and our dog Misha. I am already missing the beach, and the fresh seafood. Tonight I will finish up the last of the seafood we brought home. Hope you all enjoyed.

There is never a trip report too long and if it makes you feel any better mine are about 3 times as long as yours. I enjoyed it and would love to see your pics. That diving bird sounds pretty scary

LOL! Thanks for the laugh!

"...watched kids fish and set crab nets. Over the week, they caught some nice crabs,…."
What a great vacation experience for kids and adults alike. Yeah…they stink, but it's all part of the fun.

"My niece really enjoyed it, and now wants to be a mermaid with a purple tail when she grows up."
I remember deciding on long-term career possibilities like that one. LOL! I would always tell my parents in excessive detail why I made these choices. The answer was always the same. "You can be whatever you want, once you graduate from high school and college." For some reason, that answer always satisfied me. Let her enjoy her dreams. (Funny, I never said I wanted to own a Myrtle Beach Message Board!)

"…in the heat you can only take so much off before you are arrested.
Ummm….yes. Just ask those young girls on spring break who ended up in the City Police Dept. calling their parents to send someone to take them home.

Everyone loves trip reports, especially the long ones. So glad you had a good time. I'm sure the big black bird is sad that you had to leave, but is no doubt now harassing others.

Thanks so much. Matt!

Until your report I had completely forgot about the Lazy Gator, and we go to Murrells Inlet every year.Just added it to my "to do" list.
Thanks again..

I agree with Deanna, there is no such thing as trip report that is too long. I enjoyed it! We haven't spent much time in the Cherry Grove area so I love to hear about the different things that are there. Glad you had a good trip and took time to report. :nanner:

Thank you for sharing your report! Sounds like you all had a wonderful vacation. I also agree with everyone, no trip report is ever too long! Reading about the bird reminds me of the game "Angry Birds"

Great report. Glad you enjoyed Cherry Grove.
If your bad pizza didn't come from Basil's you should try them next trip.

Loved every word of your long report! I have always wanted to know more about Cherry Grove and the channel houses...good to know they are only a short walk to the beach.

a little off topic but my husband Terry had a hip replacement last summer(at age 62...so alot older) He had great diificulty walking and severe pain...anyway, he did amazingly well...had surgery in june and was able to come on vacation in August...having progressed fom a walker to a cane at that point...soon after that he ditched the cane as well...You would not know he had a hip replacement today...

Sounds like your trip was so much fun for all of you!

I also enjoyed reading your report. Cherry Grove is a nice neck of the woods. It was good to read about what a good family time you had with your brother's family and the "old" parents. LOL I loved the mermaid story.

Enjoyed your report. Wow, having your mom who likes to cook on vacation. How much better does it get? Hope you can get your hips repaired sooner than later and rehab quickly. I know it's painful. Wonder what the story with that bird was? YIPES!! Cherry Grove looks very probably our next stop. We tend to strand hop!
