For the shopaholics who haven't had a chance to check out Callahan's, we took a few pictures today...

http://www.pbase.com/katiejohn/calabash_nc

I would have bought half the store if Brett had let me. We walked away empty handed, but I have lots of ideas for Christmas; and I had a fantastic time window shopping.

We took 31 up to 17 to get there. Very easy... no traffic. When we were getting back on 31, traffic was all piled up on 17 near the Tanger Outlets. 31 really ought to have a sign saying, "...and I took the road less traveled."

Katie - I walked out emptied handed too, though I'm not sure if this is where there should be a :nanner: or a  . They have so much stuff! I really liked the beach theme area. Gotta love those different shades of light blue and green.

Now why am I not surprised about the picture of Brett in the OSU corner??

Wow, Katie you are brave taking your two little ones to that merchandise packed store. Georgia would've been grabbing everything in sight. The question isn't how did YOU not buy anything....how did he not buy everything OSU!??

Trust me, he WANTED to buy the whole OSU rack. haha!

We've actually developed a little strategy with the kids in stores. We hand them a toy or something to hold (in this case, a starfish shell and a stuffed turtle), which they can walk around the store with. They really focus on whatever item we hand them, and they don't attack all the other merchandise (for the most part). Then when we're getting ready to leave, we put it back on the shelf. I guess they've learned that stores are like going to a friend's house... you can play with the toys, but you can't take them home. So they don't have a meltdown when we say it's time to put the toys back. It seems to work well so far. We've been doing that for about a year with no tantrums. I'm sure store employees probably don't look too kindly on us manhandling the merchandise, but I'm sure they'd prefer that over the alternative (broken merchandise or screaming children). HA!!

I say this with my fingers crossed and my face cringing, because I'm pretty sure the next time we walk into a store, the little hooligans will make liars out of me. LOL!!

Thanks for the pictures Katie.

I have to admit we haven't visited this store yet, but I saw it when we drove to our unfortunate fishing excursion last year.

Looks like a place where I could go a bit nutty!

Help for directions please??
We have been to MB for several times,,,but not recently...last time probably in 2001 or 2002. We are staying at Carribean this year in August....how do we get to Callahans from there? Sounds like a wonderful place. And it sounds like we have missed many, many wonderful places in MB as I guess the only places we have really been to is BATB and BL.... I would love directions and great places to visit for this vacation..... Thanks so much for any help, suggestions or comments!

Hi BJ,

I can't believe any of the slackers on this message board haven't answered you yet. Come on, people!

If you head north out of North Myrtle Beach on Hwy. 17 and go through Little River, you want to take a right onto Rt. 179 just at the South Carolina/North Carolina state line. Follow 179 into Calabash. You can't miss Callahan's. It's a large retail concern on the right in the downtown area (such that it is).

If you love Christmas ornaments or anything having to do with Christmas, you'll think you've died and gone to heaven. Walk into the store, stay to the right, and keep going through a few sections until you pass through into Santa's freak show. You'll see every village piece ever made, hundreds of Christmas trees, and countless other trinkets. It's so big I actually got lost in there last year for a few minutes and had to be led out crying for my mommy.

Aside from the Christmas tsunami, Callahan's is most famous for its nautical themed items. I won't even begin to describe the avalanche of stuff in there. Suffice it to say that if you can think of it, it's probably in there.

If you want to take a little ride afterward, stay on 179 North and then grab 904 East for a serendipitous trip to Sunset Beach or Ocean Isle Beach. Or simply follow the signs. None of the beaches are hard to find. Very nice area there.

Loved your description of Callahans, especially Christmas area. But how true it is.

If you've never been there, it is worth the drive! And yes, I love the NC beaches. We stay on Ocean Isle Beach (OIB) and love it there. Just a short drive to Myrtle but a nice quiet beach.
