We are thinking for going to Pawley Island while on vacation for shelling. I would also like to see some historic sites, something different to do. Are there public parking lots and public beach access? I read on the website that there are mostly private beaches. Does anybody have any tips for us?

Take the Connector Road from the town of Pawleys Island to the island itself. If you turn left, you'll find some public parking. Watch for the signs. All the beaches are public. Sometimes owners try to make it difficult to get to them, but you won't find that at Pawleys. It's a little walk from the parking lot to the water, but not too far.

There are lots of excellent opportunities for photos. Here are a FEW I've taken there. (LOL...yeah, I know photo overload...I've got hundreds!)

Here's an text clip from Emmy's last vacation:

>....Thursday we decided on visiting Pawleys Island. I had never been to the actual Island itself and it was just beautiful. We left early and made it there in about an hour. I had previously asked on the board and knew there was a public beach access at the end of the island. As we drove onto the island the homes were something not to be imagined. They literally embraced the shore or the waterway and were majestic. It was breathtaking. The public access was practically deserted, the weather was perfect, and the shells were out in abundance. It was so relaxing and peaceful. There were no hotels, restaurants, or boomboxes to distract so we were really able to enjoy the natural beauty of the island.

Pawleys Island has a public beach area at the south end of the island. There is a public parking lot and a porta potty there but parking can be hard to come by at times. The beach area is fairly large now that the sand has been replaced but beware if you go very far out into the water because rip tide conditions are not unusual especially where the marsh empties into the ocean.

Some of the best shells I have found in the MB area have come from here. When we were down in May there were several starfish on the beach as well. I picked up a couple of expired ones and put a few live ones back into the water.

You might also want to try out Huntington Beach State Park if you like to shell. I have found some really nice shells there and several sand dollars as well. This is my personal favorite stretch of beach in the area. I can walk this beach for hours and not really care if I ever see a shell. It does cost you $5 per head to get into the park but it is well worth it to me. Make sure to check out all the other sites in the park like the wildlife on the marsh and the old castle as well if you go there.

As Patrish said we went in May and LOVED it. It was one of the highlights of our past trip. So peaceful, calm, and serene. If you can not access any of pics (Facebook) let me know and I'll post a public link.
