Everyone, pleeeease don't get down on yourselves. Most people could improve a bit.I'm considered an "athlete" and I could stand to lose a few (cough 15 cough). The trick is to not worry about losing weight because you want to look good on a beach or in certain cloths, but rather to be healtier. The rest will follow.
Patrish has the perfect idea, instead of thinking "oh God,I have to lose 20lbs",think of 1 or 2lbs a week.Baby steps are the best way to go.
Kirk also has a fantastic idea,Wii is a fun and GREAT way to lose weight.I know SEVERAL people that started to use Wii as a fun way to spend family time together, and you'd be amazed at the weight loss.My sister in law lost 30lbs,a buddy lost 15,and another lady I know lost 60lbs  . Of course eating right and smaller portions help. But make sure you take 1 day a week and reward yourself.
Patrish is correct, starving yourself is terrible. It's counter-productive because it slows your metabolism.Another trick is hot and cold drinks, and spices on food. The temperatures make your body work to either heat up or cool down your core temperature, thus burning calories. Yep,you can actually burn calories by eating or drinking.Who knew lol
I'm sorry if I overstepped any boundaries,I've just grown to care about you all alot, and I want to support you anyway I can.Good luck with the weight and stay positive.
Ron

I wondered if those Wii fits were any good. I almost got one for Christmas, but decided to splurge on a new camera instead - figured it'd get more use!

Ron,

You are so right baby steps to a healthy body is the way to go. There is no quick fix. When I was going to Weight Watchers I averaged 2 pounds a week but I worked hard and counted everything. I saved my flex points every week for a dinner out and it worked for me. I had many ups and downs but in my opinion it is all a mind game. I learned little tricks like brushing my teeth if I had a craving (it works!) and if I had to have something sweet I hardly ever told myself no I just made someone else get my small serving. No doubt I still have huge issues with self control but maybe someday I will wake up and realize that I can overcome that to,

Now with that being said most females have self image issues and want to look good. That usually makes me work harder and on occasion beat myself up. I just happen to run around with two beautiful, tall, skinny girls 5 years younger than me. Now you talk about some pressure. I cruised with them last spring :BandHead: and am headed to Vegas with them in April. They will most certain pass me up in the looks department but I WILL NOT go with this extra 15. Game On...... :cheerleader:

Regard Ron's and Deanna's posts above:

Now where's that LIKE button when I need it? Oh yeah, on Facebook!
Guess I'll just have to use :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader: :cheerleader: instead!

Just found out yesterday that I've got to go back on Prednisone again long term due to worsening health reasons. :???: Prednisone really packs the weight on me.   I just got the 40 lbs off that the previous round of 2 years packed on me and now I've gotta do it again. I'll be following this thread closely!

To all, keep up the great work! I know y'all can do it! :hello: :hello: :hello:

RonP, thanks for jumping in with some great ideas! Hope you will continue to participate.

We have friends who have a wii, and so does my daughter and her husband. They are a fun way to exercise, especially when you create competition! Of the sports games that it come with, I like bowling the most.

Good luck with the weight loss everyone. Yes, I could lose weight too but I don't focus on it too much anymore. I've maintained my weight now for 6 years and I have been up and down with weight also. Never thought I'd say this but I'm 99.8% happy with the way I am. I'm not competing with anybody. If I lose some weight fine, but I definately won't put anymore on. I've struggled daily with Type 1 diabetes for almost 30 years so I have to watch my diet always and cannot take a day off and if I really really want to lose more I'll just put my mind to it and do it. I've done it before, just have to have the right mindset.

THAT'S the answer, for sure, Cathy! You just have to make up your mind that you're going to do it, then stick to it. It's not FUN...it's DETERMINATION!

In addition to our annual Feb. vacation in Jamaica, I have another reason for wanting to dump these extra pounds. My sister-in-law in Ft. Worth and I have always been about the same size. In 2008 we did a wine-tasting cruise through the Provence area of France. We traded clothes sometimes, especially for evening wear. I'm doing another cruise with her in September, so that's another reason for wanting to get back to where I was the last time we did a vacation together.

23 days to go, and 4 more pounds to lose. Will I make it? I hope so! Food keeps getting in my way! LOL!

Glad to see us talking about weight again! I am ALWAYS watching mine. Typically, my will power slacks off in the fall & winter...I have a treadmill and do use it about 5 days per week...but the beginning of the school year is stressful in grade one...sometimes I do not leave my building until 6 pm...then drive 30min home...ummm some where on that drive I often lose my desire & motivation to walk...but as soon as I start thinking VACATION...I too am back on track...plus the fact that walking and watching what I eat helps me keep my blood pressure under control...My co-workers and I have started using myfitnesspal.com it is a free calorie & exercise tracker...that also shows how many carbs/proteins...etc...you have eaten...I do better when I write down everything that I eat...so good luck to all of us and our goals! summer is a comin~!

Yeah...Patrish you are down a pound. Just want to know how you did that eating at Nacho Hippo.  If I even smell Mexican the scales go up.

Karen,
I don't think there could be anything worse than having to take medication that increases your weight. This may be a stupid question but have you researched to make sure there is not something you can do?? Being a person that struggles with weight my heart really goes out to ya.

LOL. Deanna. I just KNEW someone would spot my Nacho Hippo review and wonder if Nacho Hippo was a good choice for a diet. It's not. But in my defense, I had a salad with dressing on the side.

Thanks for the link, JoAnn! I think this is a great topic. At the moment, it seems to be more popular than the rest of the board!

Hmmm.... there's no "Nacho Hippo Diet Plan" ? So discouraging.....

I am the last person to be giving diet advice, but..... found an interesting site which publishes nutritional contents of common pre-made and chain-restaurant dishes. With the Super Bowl coming up, here's an example for the season: Worst Party Dips

and for burger lovers: Worst Burgers

They also do comparisons of milk shakes, chicken sandwiches, etc from major chains... once you read a few of them, you notice a trend to stay away from creamy condiments  Fear not, there are a few burgers with bacon that aren't too bad.... :bounce: But, it's amazing/scary to see some burgers which appear "normal" having 2x the fat, sodium, etc of a Big Mac !

Warning... if you sign up for their newsletter, you will get spammed..... I used a yahoo account which I check a couple times a week.

Guess I'll combine some "good eats" with some shoveling and off come the pounds !

That's wonderful. Keep it up and you will easily lose those 15 lbs. by May.

We have been having cold, wet, nasty weather. I KNOW I should have gotten out today, and at the very least, gone to the Coastal Grand Mall and walked Dillard's to Belk's. But I didn't. It's supposed to warm up a little tomorrow, so we'll see. Only 2.5 pounds to lose before the end of the month. Argggg.......

I am glad to see this come back up too....I HAVE NEVER REALLY DISCUSSED THIS WITH ANYONE BUT HERE GOES...
All through high school I was very athletic...so although I have always been uuummm busty....I stayed in great shape. Then came college and 4 hour cheerleading practices were replaced with drinking and late night eating. So twenty pounds here , twenty pounds there. Still not out of control but not great.
Then a couple of months after John and I married we got our first relocation. It was a horrible, depressing place to live. I gained over 70 pounds in the fourteen months we lived there. A few years down the road I started losing it and guess what...I got pregnant!...I only gained seven pounds while pregnant because I was already overwieght and but the difficult birth and months of stress over a premmie baby...the weight I lost came back and more....stressful jobs ...more relocations...I just never got a handle on it. I would lose a few and more would come back.
Last fall I thought about lapband because my health had got so bad....but after doing all the testing and having a surgery date set(and paying my cut) my insurance decided to make me do a six month program with the dr. During the program my dr decided to leave the area...John finally said I think you should take this as a sign that you shouldn't do this surgery...you need to give it one more go on your own with my help since he had recently lost 30 pounds getting in shape for the fire dept.
I resisted at first but then around my birthday in October John Blue took a video of me and it just hit me...do it now. So I have completely overhauled my life....in baby steps.
First I gave up the soda, then I started eating better, now I have added light exercise and moving up to more hardcore exercise next week.
For me it worked to get used to doing something new before I added another layer.
Oh and I have lost 41 pounds since mid October.
