NAACP lawsuit says Bikefest traffic loop is racial discrimination.

The NAACP announced they will be filing a race discrimination lawsuit against the the City of Myrtle Beach and the city's police department over the traffic pattern in place during Bikefest.

NAACP says the traffic loop used during the festival is a form of discrimination.

The loop, created in 2015, is a 23-mile stretch of traffic funneling from Ocean Boulevard out to George Bishop Parkway and back to Ocean Boulevard. It was created after a Memorial Weekend marred with violence including a Ocean Boulevard shooting that injured eight. Officials said the loop was created to control traffic as bikers visited the strand for Memorial Day weekend, which some call "Black Bike Week." The loop is in effect from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

OK...I will. The color of your skin makes no difference to me. But what's inside your head makes all the difference in the world. The loop is/was trying to solve many long-time issues that occurred due to a bunch of people who were disrespectful of the existing laws. I hope something can be worked out, but other than the city banning both bike weeks I don't see a solution.

OK I'll add my 2 or 3 cents . I don't think the town is discriminating against anyone they are just doing what they think is best to keep people safe during events like this . But in the future I think if town of Myrtle Beach is going to continue to host big events like this weather Bike weeks or Big holiday weekends they should rethink the rerouting of traffic or putting up unsightly barricades on Ocean Blvd . Maybe a better solution would be doubling the police presence and a zero tolerance for troublemakers . I think a majority of the people who come to Myrtle Beach are good people there to enjoy all the Grand Strand has to offer .

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the city of Myrtle Beach actually hosts Atlantic Beach Bike week. So I'm not sure there is any way they can ban the event. Like it or not, they are going to be there. I think the loop is one way to try and alleviate the traffic and safety issues that this event brings. I have never personally been there during that weekend, don't ever want to be there. But I am sick and tired of these groups, be it the ACLU, NAACP or whomever stepping in and trying to throw the race card out there. The behavior of the individuals is what caused the loop to be implemented in the first place, not the color of their skin. When it takes hours instead of minutes for emergency services to respond to a call, something has to be done. This was a common sense attempt at doing that. If the same problems occur during Harley week, then by all means, the loop should be instituted for that event as well.
Just my useless two cents.
Melissa
