One evening on vacation we drove up to Crab Catchers in Little River and found yet another beautiful dining spot on the Intracoastal Waterway. It was a bit confusing at first – figuring out where to go, where to wait, etc. We had a short wait, but it was so pretty and peaceful there, we didn’t mind. This is a place to go to when you have time to relax and enjoy the scenery and your meal. The back deck is over the water so when you’re eating there, you kind of feel like you’re on a boat (only without the swaying). For an appetizer we had the fried broccoli/cheese bites. Then my husband had steak and trigger fish, baked potato, coleslaw and two beers and I had the trigger fish, french fries, coleslaw and water. For dessert, I had the BEST coconut cream pie I’ve ever eaten (and I try coconut cream pie wherever I go) and my husband had peanut butter pie. The bill was $71 before tip. We really enjoyed the serenity of this restaurant.

Around 7:00 P.M. 11 of us headed out to Crab Catchers in Little River. I mentioned in my trip report yesterday that this place had been recommended to my brother by the captain of his deep sea fishing charter and also by a local that told me it was the best fresh local seafood. My mom rode with us and I couldn't wait to hear her first response to the restaurant. When we pulled up she looked at me and said "If this place is nasty we are going elsewhere" and she was serious. Gotta love my mother. When we arrived there was a 15 minute wait for outside deck seating. The weather was perfect for the deck so that is what we decided to do. We stood outside for our wait and when they took us through the inside to the deck I felt like I was in a smoke filled bar

We were seated outside and the tables and chairs were your typical lawn furniture. Nothing fancy! After we sat down I look over and my view was a row of refrigerators and a garbage can.
Image

Oh and the waitress there in the pic is Jessica. I would think they could wear something besides a wife beater shirt, but she really ended up being a great waitress. She was Southern, to the point and a little on the rough side, but I would ask for her again if we went. She spent time with us, talked with us about the area and kept us laughing during our entire meal. Needless to say she was tipped well.

We were sitting right beside the Casino boat
Image

We started out with appetizers (remember there were 11 of us so I tried to take pics of everyone's food) Doug and I had the buffalo shrimp. They were delish!
Image

Ryan and Leanna had the Blue Crab Bites. I thought they were very good.
Image

My brother ordered the Gator Bites. I didn't care for them. They were chewy and didn't have alot of flavor. Of course this may be how gator is suppost to taste. I have no idea.
Image

Leanna ordered the hushpuppies and deep fried corn. Both were excellent. Everyone was going on about the deep friend corn. It really was good.
Image

My cousin ordered the flounder sandwich. He said it was excellent.
Image

My cousin and her husband shared the Seafood Platter. They were impressed.
Image

I got a combination meal of fried shrimp and fried scallops. If you get a combination meal it either has to be all fried or all grilled. I went out on a limb with the scallops because I don't like a very fishy taste, but they were great as were the shrimp.

Image
Image

My mom got crab cakes and I didn't get a pic. She just went on and on about them. She enjoyed herself after she got over the shock of the atmosphere.

Jessica insisted that we try dessert. They are all homemade and fresh everyday. She told us all about the lady who makes the desserts. I was about to bust, but I had to try this key lime pie that was suppost to be the best around.

It was VERY good!

Don't leave without dessert. It is not everyday you actually get homemade pies this good.

We all agree that we give Crab Catchers an A-. The minus is only because I think there could be some cleaning up around the place. Of course that may be their trade mark and that is how they want it. I don't think that my experience would have been near as nice if we had eaten inside. It is a dark closed in kinda of space and not my style at all. I would recommend going late in the evening and sitting outside. We have all decided that we do plan to visit Crab Catchers next year.

Here is their website with a few more pics if you are interested http://www.crabcatchers.net/

Thanks for the great review, Deanna. Dave and I actually drove up to Little River to try this place a couple of years back. When we arrived we both looked at each other and said I don't think so. I had heard good things about the food but the place really leaves a lot to be desired. We will give it a try on our next visit. After all it is the food we are going for anyway.

Glad to hear you all had a good meal. The last several times we went we were SOOO disappointed! This had always been one of our "musts" every time. Then we had two bad meals and the reviews on Tripadvisor were going downhill so we stayed away. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

Emmy,

That is how we have been with Liberty, but this year they gave us another great meal. I guess all restaurants have their ups an downs.

Haven't been to Crab Catchers in about 3 or 4 years, but the thing I remember the most was the deep fried corn. Just fantastic! Thanks for the pictures in the review.

Geez Deanna - you should get a job as a restaurant critic... you totally nail every place you review.

I also noticed the recent poor reviews on the other forums, glad you renewed our faith in Crab Catchers. Can't beat the deck ! (though we would never consider eating inside).

We arrived at Crab Catchers around 5:00 P.M. and were seated immediately outside. I just knew we were going to burn up, but they had giant fans blowing and it was not bad at all. As we were driving to Crab Catchers my brother nicknamed it "The Dump" and I have to say the name fits. There is nothing special about this restaurant except the food. If you decide to check it out just make sure you sit outside.

There were 10 of us so I just randomly took pics of food.

The Buffalo Shrimp has been a hit for us two years in a row

My cousin and her husband once again shared the seafood platter and loved it. The crab cake was awesome!

Doug enjoyed the shrimp platter

I decided to try something different beside shrimp. I tried the blue crab bites. It is an appetizer on the menu, but they let me order it as a meal. It wasn't as good as I remember the appetizer being last year, but it wasn't terrible by any means. The corn was delish and yes I ate both pieces.

Image
Doug had been challenged by someone at work to eat a soft crab sandwich. Have you ever seen something so gross in all your life. It looks like a big tick. Of course he ate it. Did anyone pick up that he ordered two meals

We will return to Crab Catchers. My brother loves it and it is good seafood.

New Englanders call lobsters "bugs"..... now you know why

I've lived in Maryland 20+ yrs and have only eaten soft-shell once. Very tasty, but......

Thanks for the review and the great pics !

Love Crab Catchers, and you are right... it's a dump!

Their deep fried corn on the cob is simply amazing. So is the seafood. As always, thanks for the pictures!

I have done several reviews of Crab Catchers and it still remains a family favorite. Once again if you go make sure you sit outside. The inside in my opinion if just not an enjoyable atmosphere. I saw on FB a few months back where they had done some upgrades and I was looking forward to checking that out. Well….I honestly didn’t see many changes. They had added some canopy sun blockers on the outside decks that were nice, but outside of that we saw very few changes. Maybe I just missed them.
We arrived at 4:30 and it was packed. That was a first. We did sit outside and with the new sun blockers and fans it was warm, but not extremely hot.

We ordered onion rings for appetizers. Let’s just say there were none left.
Image
Doug ordered steak and scallops. Those scallops are wonderful and highly recommended from the staff.
Image
My mom and I shared the fried shrimp platter. The deep friend corn is just as good as ever.
Image
My cousin had the crab cakes.
Image
I didn’t get a picture, but we tried their ice cream sandwiches upon suggestion from our waiter. Doug and I shared the blueberry with sugar cookie crust. Oh my! I was stuffed before I ever took the first bite but I can assure you it didn’t go to waste. My niece got the peach with sugar cookie crust. It was good also, but I preferred the blueberry.
Of course we will return to Crab Catchers.

Thanks for the review ! We went to Crab Catchers a few times years ago, glad to see not much on the outside has changed. And agree... if they offer to seat you inside, pass !
