MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — One of Myrtle Beach's best known shows is ending its run.

Dolly Parton said Wednesday in a news release she is ending the 18-year run of her Dixie Stampede dinner theater at the end of the year. Parton says she will bring a new attraction to her theater in 2011 called Pirates' Voyage. The show will include a buccaneer battle with a pirate theme and a five course meal.

Dixie Stampede was a dinner show with a cowboy theme that included 32 horses, trick riding and a stampede of Longhorn steer. Parton says Dixie Stampede will end with a run of Christmas show sin December. The new pirate shows will start in June.Parton's Dixie Stampede shows will continue in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and Branson, Mo.

I have to say... I know there will be a lot of disappointed people, but I'm actually thrilled with this decision! Every year, the boys want to go to these shows, but after going to both Dixie and Medieval Times over the course of several years, I just can't justify the cost for the 5 of us to go see the same show... again. The Pirate show sounds so exciting, I can't wait to surprise the boys with tickets next year! I think it's a really smart move on Dolly's part. Things like this are probably one of the first things that are axed when your vacation budget is a little less. By opening a new show, she can probably get a lot of the people back! Just my 2 cents!!!

Can I just say, I can't wait until MB next year... I'm already planning! :cheerleader:

The only thing I am going to miss is the delicious creamy vegetable soup they serve you at Dixie Stampede.

If you go on the Dixie Stampede website, they actually sell the soup! http://www.dixiestampede.com/zsoup.php

The recipe is also here: http://www.food.com/recipe/dixie-stampe ... tic-201592

Dixie Stampede will become Pirates Voyage

"Some folks may ask me why I would want to change Dixie Stampede after our incredible success all these years. Nearly seven million guests have enjoyed the show over the last 18, years," Dolly Parton said in an September interview in Business Week. "It may be a bold move but I think it's the right one. Myrtle Beach has so many repeat visitors because it is such a great vacation destination, it made sense for us to create a new adventure for families to enjoy and what speaks to this area more than Pirates, so grab your hats and eye patches and head on over to the Pirates' Voyage!"

In June 2011, guests will experience swashbuckling pirates on the Carolina coast. Crimson and Sapphire Pirates will battle each other on deck, in the water and in the sky above their full sized pirate ships in a 15-foot-deep indoor lagoon to the cheers and delight of their fans in the arena.

All the renovations come with a $11 million dollar price tag.

LOL, Kirk! Please unleash your inner buccaneer in the privacy of your home,
(or at least before attending a meet-up.)

Thanks, Kirk. I can't imagine how the horses will be used in a pirate show. I figured they'd get rid of the horses completely. I would imagine it's a huge cost to house and feed all those horses, but it sounds like that's not the case.

My dad and I went to see the horses this past September and asked one of the show members about the changes to the show. She said they were going to send them to Branson but I'm glad to see they're staying, even though it would be weird to have horses in a pirate show.

The saddest part that I read in the article is that the Dixie Stamped had been in MB for 19 years. It's sad to think that I'm old enough to remember MB long before any of those type of shows were part of the MB experience. Had no idea that much time had passed since those were built.

Hmmmmm.... since horses are not indigenous to North America.... they had to get here somehow. A horse with an eye patch. This I gotta see ! :pirat:

I am right there with you, it is really amazing how the MB area has exploded with business and popularity in 20 years. What will the next 20 years bring?
