We're staying at Compass Cove, coming down Tuesday. Looking for a nice SAFE park near there for the kids. Thanks!

My favorite is in Garden City. This is sort of a local secret, a quiet pier for families and anyone who wants to go crabbing, enjoy a small kid's park and quiet pier, and it's all free. The park is not very large, but the pier is cool, and a lot of people catch blue crabs there. A nice place to pack a lunch and enjoy the pier with your family.

Have you ever fished for crab? They must be a minimum of 5 inches long to take home and cook. If they are not that big, by law you have to toss them back in the water so they can become giant crabcakes one day in the future.

Get a piece of string and tie it around a raw chicken neck or some other part you can lasso, like a wing. Drop it into the water and pull it up when you see a crab latch onto it.

The park/pier:
Take17 Business S toward Garden City Beach. You'll see 2 overhead signs - one says Garden City Connector, and the other says Pine Ave. - both signs pointing left. Turn left here and go about half a mile to the dead-end at Elizabeth. The park is straight ahead at the dead end. Pull in, and you can park inside the park. You'll see swings, play area, outdoor barbecue stands, tables, and a gazebo. Just past this point you'll see a really nice pier. At the end of the pier is a shelter: And to the left you'll see some steps. You can crab from the shelter, the steps, or along the pier. I seldom see people out there. I last visited in 2011, and except for one family leaving the play area, no one was there. I've seen people pulling in lots of crabs here, and I'm always surprised it is still almost undiscovered.

Another excellent park area for families is The Market Common. There's a one-mile path circling the large lake where several interactive games for the family are set up at various intervals. These are big games with lots of flashing lights and require some jumping around in order to win against the kids.

Across the bridge is a large play area. Be sure to take some bread to feed the ducks and swans.

It's all free, and there is no fee to park anywhere, including 2 large garages near the store area.
