Well, since most people who travel to MB and go the "Rockingham way" know how to get to Rockingham, I will only post from there. I didn't put these under OH, Pa or anywhere else, you already know who you are. Everybody has their favorite way and miles vs time vs interstate vs off the beaten track. I'm not going to debate that again here, I just wanted to give the routes we took and the ease for which they provide an access to the beach. We've taken this route back TWICE now from the beach and just really like it...it's easy.

From Rockingham:

I74E to Laurinburg. Stay on I74 and don't take 74business at any time all the way to Chadbourn. At Chadbourn you will pick up 410S to Tabor City here you will pick up 710. 710 runs right into Route 9. Take Route 9 to 31S (& 22) if you are headed to MB & South Strand.

Of course, you can stay on 9 if you are headed to Little River, etc. You can also take 31S to Main St Connector now, I see on the map if you are staying in NMB.

Honestly, I would still take this route if I was going to the Southern Strand as it goes all the way to 544. 31 is an awesomely unused road. JMHO

We took this route back again this time and made it from SeaWatch to just past Wyethville in 5.5 hours. That's pretty good time. Only a few places for several miles is it a 2 lane route.

Looks promising. We always go through Rockingham on our way to the beach so we might have to give this a try when we go down in August. We've typically used the classic 220/1/74/38/9/38/501 route and avoided major traffic by arriving on Sunday and leaving on Friday, but this time we're arriving Saturday so we might need a different plan.

One thing I will say is watch your speed on 74, especially around Laurinburg! We ride on 74 alot when we go to Holden Beach and they are definitely out looking, especially on the weekends. We got stopped one night at 1AM in the morning, not another car in sight, and got a ticket for 10 over. When I went to court, it was nothing but beach travelers!

We traveled during daylight...at least by the time we got to Laurinburg. We stayed with traffic and still traveled over the limit about 5mph. We used to go your way as well, but after getting stuck a couple of times opted for different routes.

This is also a great route anyone on southbound 95 should consider. I-74 is North Carolina Exit 14 and we used it many times !

We ended up taking the typical route, planning to hop on 22 and take that into 17. We ended up hitting major slowdowns between Galivants Ferry and Aynor on 501, so we hopped off early at 319 in Aynor and took that to 22. 319 is a narrow winding road, but it was better than sitting in traffic! 22 was absolutely great and had light traffic the whole way. We made it back to Greensboro in 3:10 on the way back after visiting someone at Ocean Creek by taking 22 directly to 501, then 38-9-38-74-1-220 the rest of the way.

Is that 710, or 701 that you pick up at Tabor City? Looks like a good route.

It is 701. We went this route in June and really liked it.

Lisa,
We took this way both on our way in to the beach last weekend, and on our way home yesterday. Cut off TONS of time and traffic, and we made it back to Morgantown in record time. Mostly 4-lane driving at interstate speeds. I would definitely recommend this route.

LOL!! :hysterical:

Now I am even more confused than I was before!

I think I better just let the Expedition's nav system tell us which turn... one thing I found out from experience... it may not always take you the best way, but it will ALWAYS get you where you need to go!

If GPS hasn't been updated in recent years it might get you even more confused around Rockingham. Have heard a number of people say between Ellerbe and Rockingham the road disappears on the GPS.
I don't know. I'd rather spend a few minutes lost than an hour reading directions on turning the GPS on....

Any questions about route let me know. Can draw ya a picture right up to MarVista doorstep...

Nice to see that you folks have finally discovered the way I've been going to the beach all my life.
