MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A new business speeding into Myrtle Beach. It's an electric bike company, very prevalent in the West Coast, but new to our area, and the first of its kind to come to the Carolinas. An electric bike is exactly how it sounds, its just like a regular bike, only with a motor and a battery.

The owner of Pedego Myrtle Beach says the bikes can help support the push to make our area more cyclist and pedestrian friendly. He thinks electric bikes will spark new interest and eventually put more bikes on our roads.

Patrish, Dave has had an electric bike for years and it is great! He needs to exercise but because of his heart issues also needs to be cautious. He always liked biking but gave it up after his first heart attack as he was afraid he would get too far from the house and get into difficulty. The solution was the electric bike. He can peddle and when he tires switch it over to run on the motor. Then he cruises along until he is rested then peddles again. We have a very steep hill that is very long and goes down to the lake. He was concerned on his first try but the bike had no difficulty going up the hill! They are really great and I am sure will be very popular. Unlike the usual motor bike when switched over to run on the battery it is quiet which makes it popular for driving in a residential area.

This does sound fun. :nanner: Wonder how charging would work for the folks that rent a bike for a week and stay on the 14th floor of a high-rise ?

Kirk, the battery is not that big. Dave just leaves it on the bike on the back porch when he charges his but you can slip it out quite easily and take it inside to charge if you wish. They are really great. I am surprised they are not more popular. Dave has had his about 8 years. He has 2 batteries on his so he can go a longer distance.
