Traveling to MB for the first time the first full week in October. Been there several times in the past during the summer months. Should I expect any more or less fog than normal on I-77 in the mountains? Also, I'm looking forward to taking the new by-pass past Winston Salem that I've read about that will hook me up directly to 220. How much time will that shave off the trip rather than taking 40?

Can't help with the bypass -- but we come down from Michigan and I haven't noticed much fog in the mountains down I-77, just when it rains. The only difference we notice is the gorgeous color!

When I've driven down during the last 2 weeks of Oct I alway found it raining with fog between the tunnels. Sunny when you go in the first and sunny when you come out of the second but I could never decide if it was fog or clouds between them. It was never too thick that you couldn't see but there was fog. Don't let it worry you as it's just between the tunnels and the rest of the drive is enjoyable.

I always stop to enjoy the fall colours and take a few pictures at the scenic lookout on HWY19. Great views there.

You just never know about the fog on I77 near Fancy Gap. We've been through there in October, December, and February and it has been clear and beautiful. But we've also been through there in the middle of July on a clear afternoon and had fog so thick that we had to pull over. You would assume that the Fall months would be more foggy, but that hasn't been our experience over the years.

I'm not sure about the "bypass" either, because we've always bypassed that area and cut off a huge amount by staying on 52 past Winston Salem for another 20 miles to Lexington, then on 64 East for 26 miles to Asheboro to get on 220.
