Beach Renourishment Pogram

Many of you read Dawn's recent trip report where she mentioned the renourishment of the beach in Surfside Beach and Garden City. Here are some more details about what's going on.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. got the $29.5 million contract for the Garden City Beach/Surfside Beach section. The rest of Horry County's shoreline will be replenished during the coming year. Currently dredges are scraping up sand from about 3 miles offshore, then pumping it onto the beach, where it drains before being smoothed by bulldozers. It has been 10 years since the last replenishment program, and Wally and I remember it well. We picked up a lot of wonderful shells that year.

Renourishment of Surfside Beach. Notice the ship and rig about 3 miles out:

Sorry about the quality of this picture. I was looking directly into the sun, but it gives you an idea of how much the beach will be widened in this area:

Thanks for the pics!

By chance, have they determined a schedule for approximate dates and what sections of the beach are to be done? Was just wondering for vacation planning. Don't want to end up coming when the beach in front of us is a 'work in progress'.

Glad to see this being done. You can never have enough 'Beach'!

Barb, you should not have to worry since you stay on the south end of the beach. Right now, I don't know any more than what was in the newspaper story. If I see a schedule, I'll be sure to post it.

I remember the last time they did the re-nourishment program - 10 years ago. The hotels did not inform their customers that their beach would be "under construction" and a lot of people were understandably upset when they arrived at their oceanfront room or condo, opened the patio curtains expecting a lovely view of the Atlantic Ocean, and instead saw the same thing you just saw in my pictures.

So for the 2008 season, I'd suggest our members ask about the re-nourishment program BEFORE they book their room.

Does anyone know if the beach replenishment program is taking place in front of the Holiday Sands South resort. Any information will be greatly appreciated as we have our vacation planned for June 29 thru July 7 of 2008.

Thanks,

Clint

I haven't read anything about this project lately, but you should call or e-mail the City of Myrtle Beach with your question.

If they don't know, they should be able to point you to someone who does.

I was told they will be finished at Pirateland by the time of your visit (June 28 to July 6) but did not receive any other details.

For some reason, this subject has two strings. I think you'll find the answers on the link below. Kellie (username xoxluvnbeach) found a link outlining the dredging schedule, and other people have been adding comments:
