Hi everyone,

Just curious about the ocean. I have been hearing that we shouldn't even put our feet in it :dontknow: ? We are going next month, should we stick to the pools and waterpark at the hotel?

Here's a link to the NRDC:

There are a lot of questions about the situation. I sent an e-mail this morning to the city asking if there is going to be an official response. I'll post additional information if I hear from them.

Here is their response:

On March 8 I contacted the city about some of the things I had read myrtlebeachsc.com. I received the following:
Patricia,

Thank you for taking my call this morning, As I mentioned, the City of Myrtle Beach has addressed this issue multiple times, last week, through the media. At your request, below is information on what I explained to you on the phone. Thank you for contacting the City of Myrtle Beach.

You probably saw that we had a minor sewage pipe issue two Sundays ago at Withers Swash. A two-inch valve broke, causing a release of sewage into a drainage ditch that flows into the Swash. We fixed the leak, cleaned up the sewage, treated the ditch, notified the state and asked CCU to test the water, both in the swash and at the ocean. The tests came back very good, especially at the ocean, where the water quality was excellent.

Contrary to what you are seeing out there on someone else’s social media, we don’t have a water quality issue. We do test the ocean water twice a week in the summertime at various locations along the Grand Strand. The advisories are for small areas (200 feet north and south) at the testing locations, out of an abundance of precaution. Normally, the test results don’t require an advisory at all, but we thought a standing advisory would be easier than issuing an advisory on those occasions when one was required. Apparently, someone is using our precautions against us, so perhaps it’s time to rethink that system. This is one of those examples where you can’t believe everything you see on the internet.

This is me speaking again: Remember that DHEC has had a “no swim” advisory on our beaches for years. Also remember that social media such as Facebook contains a lot if misinformation.

I believe the city is correct.

When you look at the site below, it should raise a lot of questions…. and I don’t mean about bacteria.

This is another page from the same website.

I am not going to get into any discussions about this website on the board, except to say it has always reminded me the the National Enquirer. It was this site that finally moved me get in touch with the city.

Here is the latest (from the same website)

Thank you. There is always some form of social media that has information that is not true on everything from people to places. It's crazy.
