Just putting this out there for anyone using this route. There is an easy go around that really adds no time if heading to the beach. Take exit 29 in Kentucky. Follow 25E to Morristown and get on I-81 and it will take you to I-40. Supposed to be closed for weeks, but this doesn't look as bad as the rock slide a few years ago in the same area.

Thanks for posting this. Those rock slides can be so dangerous, and I seldom think about the signs when I see them on the highways.

If bad language is offensive please turn down the volume before watching this.)

The slide this year came from above the road, so repairs will pretty much be removing the debris and fixing any damage. The one back a few years ago near the same area actually had the southbound lanes collapse and go down the mountain. The road was closed for months when that happened. Here is a pic of the one from this year and another from a few years back. The collapse is my biggest fear. The I-40 stretch going toward Asheville is an area much like Jellico mountain as far as slides are concerned. Saw a partial Lane collapse just a few years ago near Asheville coming back from MB and it must of happened while we were in MB because it wasnt there on the way to the beach.

Latest updates. Southbound lanes must be opened back within 14 days and one northbound within 21. Project completion by April 15.

Regardless of the slide if I was heading to the beach via i-75 South I would take exit 29 in Kentucky over to I-81 and access I-40 there. Saves a few miles and you get to go through a nice big tunnel that the kids would like at the Kentucky-Tennesee line.

This is my preferred way too! We get off in Newport and take 25 until we get to aback road that leads to my parents farm! Such a pretty drive!
We are coming to KY in a couple of weeks and my mom kept reminding me about the rock slide. I finally had to tell her I hadn't been that way in at least eight years!

That route does break up the drive a little bit. If they ever build the proposed bypass between London and Corbin it will actually be a better route to the beach. Right now it is about a push going 25E or 75.

We went into TN last week via 75 and southbound is completely reopened. Northbound is still closed to all traffic.
