The Internet is all ablaze with the reported shark attacks in the outer banks. Today, someone posted a photo of sharks in the surf near Surfside. People right now are failing to realize that shark sightings are not uncommon. The attacks in North Carolina are due to the sea turtle hatchings. Here's a little statistic:
From 2001 to 2014, there were 25 reported shark attacks in the outer banks. During the same time period, there were 219 attacks in Florida. Millions of people enter the water on a daily basis in the summer. We're talking about 7 people being bitten. How many people are in car accidents every day? How many people diagnosed with cancer? Keep calm, folks.

If I die while swimming in the ocean, then I died a happy man.

Unfortunately I am going to probably not go into the ocean this year and if I do it will only be mid calf. I am nervous about sharks and although I know the statistics there have been too many attacks in a short period of time for my comfort.

I just feel that that the odds are in my favor same as any year. By the way, there were some photos floating around today that were NOT of Myrtle Beach even though they claimed to be.

With our upcoming trip to NMB in a week, you don't know how many people have warned me about letting the kids swim. And not one of these folks have ever even been to NMB. I've been going my entire 45 years and never once had anything occur. I'm not worried.
