We are staying the first week of August, Monday through Friday. I though about adding either Sunday or Friday night, so we are there for a whole 5 nights. I'm checking on price, but would there be any good reason to stay one night over the other?

Saturday is usually "change day" in Myrtle Beach (with more traffic coming in and out.) Plan accordingly.

I agree with Patrish. I would much rather arrive on Sunday and leave on a Friday. Takes the busy travel day (Saturday) completely out of the equation. It's a nightmare if you leave the beach (or arrive) at certain times on a Saturday.

Patrish and MBKY already beat me to it. Not only will Sunday be cheaper but the traffic will be less intense.

I agree... I know late July it was busy coming in and leaving on Saturday ... but last year when we came in mid Sept we had no traffic coming in on Sat and leaving the following Sat. ... Not sure how it is in August..

That week in August will still be bad. MB is sort of like Disney World in that all the major crowds happen when kids are out of school. Most schools wait until at least mid August to start.

I have to agree with the others.....avoid a Saturday arrival/departure if at all possible.

We always come in on Friday afternoon and stay at BATB...we get some sun time in around the hotel pool...some BATB time in the evening...then we get up early Saturday morning and head down to Surfside...sign in at the rental office so they can call us when the house is ready...we eat a meal somewhere...visit the Pig for supplies...get in some beach time...miss the heavy duty traffic...it is all good because we are at the beach!!!

My husband wants to stay Friday. (We are spending the prior Saturday with family in NC and are scheduled to stay 2 nights with them, meaning Sunday. He feels bad backing out on them so we can get to the beach faster). We are staying at the Caravelle, which is in the northern part of MB. Would Saturday morning "leaving" traffic still be bad if we took Route 17 north to Route 22, and then took 22 to the other side of Conway, and then back to 501? Or what about going up to Route 9 and taking that to Route 76? Would either of those lessen the effects of normal Saturday traffic?

Taking route 9 will be way less traffic but keep in mind it's a two lane road and small towns with lower speed limits. The route 22 to 501 route will be fine as long as you are on the road before 7AM.

We usually arrive at the beach between 11 and 12 and I have witnessed traffic leaving the beach backed up for miles on 22 where it merges with 501. Like phroggy said, if you leave early you can miss it. Once 8 am hits , it is too late.

We always leave NMB via 22 to 501 at or a little before 7am and have no issues. This is in July so we expect the traffic and want to get ahead of it.

Well, we are now officially checking out on Saturday the 9th. We really do want to spend 2 nights with his aunt and uncle and get our taste of the mountains (where we usually vacation). I told him we'd have to pack up well the night before, and try to be on the road by 7:30, no later than 8 on that Saturday. He thinks we can do it. I'm so excited! Only 6 or so weeks left to go!
