While a growing number of people have been flocking to the state for its mild winters and a slower pace, the state remains almost an “undiscovered gem,” says Laura Scharr-Bykowsky, a principal at Ascend Financial Planning in Coluimbiaa, SC. What's more, the site offers low taxes including real estate tax."

Kiplinger lists SC among tax- riendly states for retirees:

Retire to Myrtle Beach: Kiplinger magazinehas listed South Carolina Carolina in the  10 most tax-friendly states for retirees iin the 2016 issue..

“The state tax does not tax Social Security, and it provides a generoue retirement income deduction when calculating state income tax. State Tax is reasonable and property taxes are very low. Taxes are based on 4% of the market value of the home, and seniors qualify for a homestead exemption,"  Kiplinger said in summarizing South Carolina's policies for people 65 years of age. .

Some other points noted by Kiplinger include:
People 65 and over may deduct $10,000 in qualifying retirement income, including public employee retirement plans, Keogh plans, IRA distribution and retirement

People 65 and over can take a Senior Deduction of  $15,000, for single filers, or $30,000, for married couples filing jointly. However, the $15,000 deduction must be offset by the amount taken with the retirement-income deduction. Retired Militaary personnel 65 and older can deduct up to $10,000 of military retirement benefits.

Mar 25, 2017 Some South Carolina coastal growth slows, but not in Myrtle Beach. The rush of new residents moving to South Carolina's coast eased last year in the Charlesto County and Hilton Head areas, but not in greater Myrtle Beach. This new census shows that Myrtle Beach was again the nation's second-fastest growing metropolitan area, with a population increase of 3.9 percent during the year ending July 1. The Charleston and Hilton Head/Beaufort areas did not make the top 20 growth list, for the first time in several years. The Post and Courier
