Retired Folk in South Carolina...

Market Watch, The Wall Street Journal. 1/11/2014: "If the retired folks in South Carolina seem relaxed, it may be because they're enjoying more low-key lifestyle, and less congestion than they would further south among their brethren in Florida. While a growing number of people have been flocking to the state for its mild winters and a slower pace, the state still remains in an “undiscovered gem,” says Laura Scharr-Bykowsky, a principal at Ascend Financial Planning in Columbia, SC. What's more, S.C. offers low taxes as well as state taxes."

Tax Friendly Myrtle Beach and southern Living!

Kiplinger lists S.C. among the top tax-friendly states for retirees:

Retire to Myrtle Beach: Kiplinger magazine has listed Myrtle Beach in the top 10 most tax-friendly states for retirees in the 2016 publication.

“The state tax does not tax social security, and it provides a generous retirement income deduction when calculating income tax. State Tax is reasonable and property taxes are very low. Taxes are based on 4% of the market value of the home, and seniors qualify for a homestead exemption,"  Kiplinger said in summarizing South Carolina policies for people age 65 (and up) years of age.

Some other points by Kiplinger include:
People 65 and over may deduct $10,000 in qualifying retirement income, including public employee retirement plans as well as Keogh plans, IRA distribution and retirement.

People 65 and over can take a Senior Deduction of  $15,000, for single filers, or $30,000, for married couple filing jointly. However, the $15,000 deduction must be offset by the amount taken by the retirement-income reduction. Retired Military personnel 65 and older can deduct $10,000 of military benefits.
